Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

Just bought eight Opteron 64 880s for twenty bucks a piece. Those clock at 2.4 ghz stock. How'd I do? :D

Now I'm just looking for pc3200 ECC and heat sinks! :D

I'm so excited! How much RAM do you think I should get? I was thinking at least 9 GB

880's were pretty decent chips in their day..Nice score and cheap way to build a multi cpu system.
Enjoy and have fun with it!

Just made #2 for the week.. Working on #2 for the month! devilish

I think the heatsinks might cost as much as the CPUs! $20 a pop is for nothing applause
The thing about RAM is that it can easily be added. 8GB should be enough to get you up and running. Then you will be able to see if you need more or not. Hope you can find equally inexpensive heatsinks and RAM.

Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

Why thanks! I thought it was quite the steal. It'd be cool if I built something (in the end) worth more than what I put into it- know what I mean?

I really want to buy some heatsinks but I'm not sure what will be compatible with the server....

Let's see what we can find.

Dear Lord is this sweet.
Like a group of people sat down and planned out a workstation with every top part you could think of.

But did they ask you about what to build (or are you nda?)
Is SM even entertaining the idea of OC with that system?

Wow! That's awesome!

$4 for a 512 MB (x20) for a stick of ecc 3200- what do you think?

Re: This is for bbover and the IBM guys ..

Nickoli, again $4 a stick is for nothing, and 10GB should be plenty. Check that they dont have to be installed in sets - often only combinations of say 4sticks, 8sticks or 16sticks can be used!

Again I would be slightly concerned about is the power consumption. 5X2GB would be around a quarter of the RAM power draw, and it all adds up, but they would cost a lot more.

Any luck on the heatsink front?
I cant find much on your board, it'€™s 2004, and I know server boards tend to have their own bespoke socket design - a standard skt 940 heatsink will probably not fit.
Measure the dimensions of the socket holes for mounting the heatsink, and have a look close to the sockets for capacitors that could prevent you using some heatsinks. If you estimate the dimensions of a heatsink that would fit, you might be able to search for skt 940 server heatsinks and find a suitable one that way.
Try looking on the manufacturers website (if they are still around) for details/manuals (if you dont have a detailed manual already). You may want to find a similar motherboard from the same manufacturer, and see if they have more info on a recommended heatsink.

Good luck,
