I had asked about the possibility of changing the My Projects panel so you can specify projects you do not want to receive work for. I think this would be useful for those who have put put a lot of time in on one or more projects and who would like to receive work for any project except those marked in such a category.
For instance, I would want to receive work for all projects except FAAH, but I want to select only one other project at this time. If there is no work for the project I choose I will get work for any of the other active projects. I would rather get work for any of the projects except those for which I say I do not want work to be sent. I had brought this up in another thread, but I think it may have gotten lost or buried so I am opening this thread to specifically identify a requirement. If this already exists in another thread, please tell me so we can close this one as resolved. |

dkt I do not really understand the point. The total number of projects being small, it is very mangeable.
----------------------------------------Just tick all the projects you want to receive work from, and untick the function to allow sending other work if the projects you have selected do not have any available. The only risk is that if none of the projects that are ticked, have work then your devices will stay idle. That's all. Hope this solves your problem. ![]() |

Thank you for the suggestion. We will keep it in mind when we look at changes to this part of the website. One thing to think about is that the interface needs to be easily understood by novice users. If there are options that involve nested if statements to describe how project selection would work, then it will be challenging to understand.
Another suggestion for this interface is the ability to establish 'weights' for the projects so that you could say run FightAIDS@Home at 75% and Help Conquer Cancer at 25%. There are some prerequisite work that we need to do before we could make this change, but it has the benefit of allowing the behavior you describe. You would be able to assign 99% to your primary focus and then 1% to your 'backup' project. However, we have a long backlog of work to do so it will be some time before we can address these changes. We do appreciate the suggestions! |

@ Hypernova: It doesn't solve the problem.
----------------------------------------Let's say I want to concentrate on DDDT2, so if there is work from that project I want that and only that. Additionaly, let's say for some reason I have a personal problem with HCMD so I don't want to crunch for that. Nevertheless I don't want my computers to idle around. Your system does not offer a solution for that. The only current solution is to choose here only DDDT2 and no other WCG projects, choosing external projects instead. It has been discussed before, and I believe it was classified as "somewhere on the wishlist" for "later" implementation. As I preview my text here I see the knreed post. The "percentage" solution as mentioned should offer a satisfying solution by giving "0%" to the unwanted projects. Someone recently mentioned the idea of having a setting to optimise workload for badges. If that were implemented, it could be possible to specify which badges you are aiming for for each selected project - so it stops giving work for that project once the manager knows that the target badge is going to be achieved.
In terms of interface, it doesn't need to be that complicated - In fact, it might be a good idea to have a choice of "basic" and "advanced" settings for projects. The "basic" page could be the same as at the moment, for those who are not concerned about extra settings. The "advanced" page could have boxes to enter the percentages mentioned above, and/or pull-down lists to select the target badges for each desired project. The pull-down lists for each project could also include options like "No work". (If the targest are defined as "xxx dats" and "xxx years", targets beyond the current badges - e.g. "4 years" could also be included. Perhaps these two advanced settings suggestions compete somewhat - they could be handled by mutually exclusive pages. One could be "Set priorities by percentage"; the other could be "Set priorities by target". Anyway, I think it would be good to keep a basic page so as not to confuse newcomers. |

It looks like there are some really good ideas being presented. The percentage choice may give improved control over which projects are to be sent to the user, but I think it would be better to use a variable number for the value to be associated with obtaining work such as values from zero to ten with zero saying no work is wanted for a project and ten being the value used for the project(s) with the highest priority.
An advanced page could be used to change the value associated with each project with the initial value always set to one specific value to allow a user to have control over the projects being executed. |

Maybe we hide the forest for the trees? It is the special setup of WCG that lots (or better - a few ![]() I guess handling the sub-project issue as part of the BOINC development might be a good idea, because then other BOINC projects that have different sub-projects could benefit as well. If I could subscribe into a main project at BOINC, and get attached to all or some sub-projects, that would be nice. Regards, Martin ![]() |

As everybody will appreciate, the percent function will have to be multi-day. Rarely is there an even sum of tasks in the feeders with the added spanner that tasks are highly variable in run time. We keep asking for more and more control features further complicating the back-end. What is on a single science / single project integrated in the client i.e. project weight /resource share, thus a distributed scheduling effort at client end, is here to be designed into the server side. For how long should it try to maintain that balance? From moment last changed? Sliding 7 days, 14 days, month? What if all the tasks are sucked up by the exclusives then 99% / 1% turning out into practically 50% / 50%. Upset forum posts over not getting what's being asked for per the My science profile?

I also remember uplinger (?) mentioning the difference between WCG-side (counting work units) and user-side (counting seconds) and the difficulties that this can cause on the programmer-side.
