I downloaded BOINC for Linux from the WCG webpage in Jan. and have been crunching happily.
----------------------------------------However, I want to remove that BOINC software and install the BOINC version from the Ubuntu repository (newer BOINC version; will be updated automatically in the future). My plan is to: 1. shut down BOINC 2. install the new version from Ubuntu repository 3. in the boinc-client file in /etc/init.d, change the BOINC directory from the default location to my existing BOINC data directory 4. start the new BOINC Is that the correct procedure? I just don't want to lose any work records of what I've already done. Thanks in advance. ![]() |

kateiacy,
I would recommend that you set your current installation to not allow new work. Let the agent go dry. press update once more before you stop it completely. Then delete the BOINC directory that was created. Now you should be able to install from Ubuntu and let it install to the default location because it creates new user id to help with security. You'll then need to plug in your member name and password to attach it to World Community Grid. This is the ideal way of doing this as now it'll start when the linux box boots up. You do not need to be logged in after you install with the repository. Hope this helps, -Uplinger |

If I don't point the daemon script to my old directory, but start new with the default directory as you suggest, will the machine be recognized by WCG? Currently it is a trusted host, and receives DDDT2 type A units. I don't want to lose its track record. However, if there's better security if it starts over with a new user id, maybe that's worth it. ![]() |

Your hosts trust value will be regained quickly, and it's cross-project, so even if you did not pick up DDDT2 WU's straight away, your trust would rise from crunching other tasks and be applicable to DDDT2. I would do as Uplinger suggests.

Thank you all for your quick and helpful responses!
----------------------------------------I will do as Uplinger (seconded by skgiven) suggests. (I will do it as soon as the next batch of DDDT2 has gone out and I've finished crunching any that I receive... ![]() ![]() |

State of R++ Rating Nirvana requires an initial 77 sequential valid results to add grosso modo 1 for every faulty result (invalid, aborted, error, detached). Switch to HCC and my quad gets there in under a day... Give it the KISS.
