Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Today, the Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN) wrote a ‘Science & Technology Concentrate’ titled ‘Idle time for Solar Cells’ about CEP2, announcing the launch of for Win/Mac, and calling for the chemical community to join in. The C&EN is a weekly magazine published by the American Chemical Society (ACS) – the world’s largest scientific society. C&EN covers science and technology, business and industry, government and policy, education, and employment aspects of the chemistry field around the globe.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

C&EN writes in its CEP2 Science Concentrate :

IDLE TIME FOR SOLAR CELLS
If you’ve ever wanted to help the search for the next generation of solar cells, but didn’t feel you had the scientific chops to do so, now you can pitch in by simply downloading a computer screensaver from clean energy.harvard.edu. When you are not u...sing your computer, chemists from Harvard University will harness the central processing unit (CPU) to churn out computational data on organic photovoltaics that are candidate solar-cell materials. The undertaking, known as the Clean Energy Project, is a joint venture between Alán Aspuru-Guzik’s group and IBM. The project launched Phase I for molecular mechanics calculations in 2008. As of last week, Macintosh computers and PCs that run on Microsoft Windows could start participating in Phase II, which focuses on electronic structure calculations. “This first-principles quantum chemical investigation is performed on the World Community Grid, or WCG,” Aspuru-Guzik explains. “WCG currently has 530,000 members with 1.6 million computers, which altogether provide 180 years of CPU time every day to each of the seven currently active projects.” Clean Energy Project results will be publicly available, he adds, and will “allow for a massive computational screening and design of potential candidate structures at the heart of organic photovoltaic materials.” —BH

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Roberto is currently at the 2010 Joint NNIN/C & NCN Fall Workshop titled ‘Building a Collaborative Framework for Nanoscale Simulations’ at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he discusses the Clean Energy Project with other researchers from the computational chemistry and condensed matter physics community.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

We had our weekly phone conference with the IBM team today – one of the news was that our load is now ramped up to about 40%. All systems are still keeping up ;).

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Looking at the CPU load, its only using 15% of 16 CPUs. It would be great if the server would run WCG/CEP2 along - say 50%.

To clarify: the 40% refers to the load we get assigned from IBM, not what we can handle (i.e, we currently get 40% of our regular share of the WCG capacity). Also, CPU use is only one aspect that has to keep up, others are I/O, memory, bandwidth, ..., which all have to match demand.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

As this log is about what we do all day long, we clearly cannot let you miss out on the lighter side of our daily business: the xkcd comics for math, science, and computer geeks ;). A recent one hit it home for us and we wanted to share it with you (see left bottom) .

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Our Research Log got more than 1000 visits in just under 2 weeks which makes it one of the most active threads in the CEP2 forum. It seems that people are interested in this, so we’ll keep going ;).

P.S.: Our facebook page could still use more followers, so ‘Like’ us if you haven’t already done so.
