We had a Skype conference with Carlos in Mexico City yesterday discussing the progress of a CEP branch focused on using descriptor type calculations and models, which Carlos has been spearheading.

Some of us visited a talk by Dr. Nicky Tolliday from the Broad Institute (down the road in Cambridge) on Wednesday, titled: “Building a small molecule tool box for biomedical research: Probe development opportunities through the NIH’s MLPCN”. It was very interesting to see how experimental high-throughput screening in bio-med science is done. While the topic and methods are completely different than ours in CEP2, there is a lot of overlap in the overall strategy. That is good – shows that the things we are doing seem to make sense ;).

We had another meeting with Lauren the other day and she presented the first story board draft of her OPV animation – very exciting!

This is a (somewhat outdated) article on our high-performance research cluster on which we usually run our calculations. The hardware description gives you an idea about the challenges that had to be overcome on our side to port the quantum chemistry studies of CEP2 onto the extremely heterogeneous WCG.

We had a scheduled server downtime today where our friends from Harvard Research Computing added a new 24TB storage array to expand ‘Ms Piggy’ - our in-house CEP2 storage device. They also used the opportunity to implement a few modifications on the server and we are now back online. Thanks to the RC team and thanks also for your patience!

The Harvard CEP2 team and our friends from Harvard Research Computing went out for dinner tonight to celebrate that the project has successfully been on the grid for a couple of months and is finally settling now.

We just passed the milestone of 1000 years of computing time for CEP2. This is awesome! We are very grateful for your all your support of this research enterprise. Keep crunching!

We had our last weekly phone conference with the IBM team yesterday – from now on we’ll be on a monthly schedule. The Harvard Research Computing team joined in and we discussed potential tweaks to make the project smoother for participants, addressing some of the issues that were raised on the forum (please also see http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/...422&offset=40#306284).
We also decided to try making our research log ‘sticky’ in the forum, i.e., having it displayed at the top at all times. Let us know what you think about this change! |
