We are very proud and happy to announce that we managed to team up with HGST (formerly Hitachi Global Storage Technologies, now part of the Western Digital Corporation family) on the CEP hardware front. HGST is generously sponsoring us with the harddrives for our upcoming Jabba storage arrays for which we are extremely grateful. HGST drives have now for over two years been our primary data storage medium and we were very impressed by their reliability. It’s good to know that the results produced by the WCG crunchers are in good hands and we are not shy acknowledging it. Thanks again to HGST for supporting the Clean Energy Project!

We mentioned a few weeks back that our very own Aidan Daly was awarded a prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Here you can read some more about Aidan.

Thanks to the awesome help of the IBM/WCG team (in particular Kevin Reed), the Harvard Research Computing team (in particular Jerry Lotto) and our new lab admin Marlon Cummings we received a new SSL Certificate for the cleanenergy.worldcommunitygrid.org address, which we need to operate the Clean Energy Project. This was actually a very tricky process and we are very grateful to everyone for figuring this out! You guys are the best!

Here is a slightly extended news item on the hardware sponsoring by HGST.

I am glad you are trusting in the reliability of your drives. I am quite sure you must have some provisioning for off-site backup. Could you describe that, if it is not top secret ?

Hi Sgt.Joe,
no secret at all - we actually wrote about this a couple of times already. The first level of redundancy is RAIDing of the jabba storage arrays. In case that fails, we have tape backups of our data that our friends at Harvard Research Computing take and store for us using a fancy tape robot. We are currently exploring the possibility of storing another copy outside Harvard at a national lab, but that's really still in the planning stages. Best wishes from Your Harvard CEP team |
