Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Sule was scheduled to give group meeting for the Aspuru-Guzik Group today on "The story of DA2T and some tricky charge transport parameters" – which is essentially the proof-of-principle and template study for CEP2. She was unfortunately tied up, so Alan, Roberto, and Johannes gave an impromptu update on CEP2 as a whole – tag-team-style. biggrin

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Alan gave a test run for his IBM WCG webcast on CEP2 the other day. The actual webcast to the WCG crowd and interested public will be this week on Earth Day (Friday). Don’t miss tuning in and shooting your questions at the boss biggrin.

Is these some status of the project such as % done? For example fight aids @ home has a status site: http://fightaidsathome.scripps.edu/status

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hi lucidtechgrid,
we technically do have a target but our search for OPV materials is designed in a dynamic and responsive fashion which makes it hard to pinpoint a certain number of calcs to perform. We'll nevertheless sit together one of these days and see whether we can make a more concrete and up-to-date prediction.
Best wishes
Your Harvard CEP team

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Im sure its posted somewhere so pelt me with eggs and call me a noob if you wish but.

What is the significant difference between CEP phase I and phase II...

with this, any guesstimation when we might be approaching phase III and what do you forsee the significant differences be there? Ill lend you my crystal ball but it's been cracked from where the chain held it to the ceiling in the discotheque from where i stole it from .

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Hello Ascholten,
a) Phase 1 performed molecular mechanics calculations: In the first phase of the project, the computations focused on understanding how hypothetical candidate molecules pack together to form a solid (either crystal, film, polymer...) and to predict if that solid would have the right electronic properties to possibly be used in solar cells. These calculations were carried out in phase 1 of the project using CHARMM, a molecular mechanics software package developed by the Karplus group at Harvard University. For more information, please see The Clean Energy Project - Phase 1.

b) Phase 2 is performing electronic structure calculations: To obtain more accurate optical, electronic and other physical properties of the candidate solar materials, quantum mechanics calculations are being performed for each of the candidates. These calculations will be performed with the Q-Chem quantum chemistry software, developed by Q-Chem, Inc. This work will result in a useful database of information about the properties of a large number of compounds. This phase will also provide direct input to experimental groups to aid in their design of improved solar cells.

So CEP1 runs CHARMM over the molecules and CEP2 runs QCHEM. This gives us 2 types of info about the molecules being studied. I have not heard of any additional programs being considered, though they may want to study some additional molecules with CHARMM and QCHEM.

Lawrence

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

A friend of ours at the Argonne National Lab pointed out this Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Postdoctoral Fellowship, which may be of interest for the younger CEP2 followers in academia.

Re: Research Log: Updates from the Harvard Team

Alan just arrived back from the West Coast where he gave a series of seminars – a few of them on the CEP.
