Re: UK

@ Fosking, your Graphics card on your quad core is good for GPU crunching, if it isn't already, you will lose 1x cpu core if you decide to get gpu running, but the points are worth it. biggrin

Already found the GPU option cool
You are right, it is crunching 3 CPU and 1GPU (says 1CPUs + 1 ATI GPU).

edit. I would be interested to know if it's possible to run more than 1 GPU WU at a time though please. devilish

Re: UK

@ fosking

One other bit of information from you - What version of BOINC are you running? (Click Help/About in BOINC to check) If it's anything 6.xx.xx I'd recommend that you upgrade to either 7.0.28 or 7.0.36 especially if you decide to participate in GPU crunching.

Following on from TMC's comment about GPU selection using Device Manager -
In the section Available Projects (and Intermittent Projects you might consider selecting the individual projects that interest you rather than Participate in All Projects. If you follow this route then it's probably not worth selecting HCC - why crunch HCC on a CPU core when you get x10 more crunching using the GPU for HCC.

I would be interested to know if it's possible to run more than 1 GPU WU at a time though please

Re: UK

One thing has crept into mind, you say the laptop gets shut down. Is that a full shut down or do you hibernate/sleep the laptop? If it hibernate/sleep, then make sure you set BOINC to "leave application in memory (LAIM)" so that no processing is lost when the laptop starts up.

I check the CEP checkpoints by opening the "stderr.txt" that is in my "C:\ProgramData\BOINC\slots\7" folder - 7 is the slot my last CEP was stored in but will change depending on which slot becomes free for the next unit.

I believe there are programs that you can run that show this info too.

Re: UK

I just hibernate the laptop and not shut it fully down. Yes I have the LAIM selected, thank you.

Re: UK

Ah splendid. Sounds like you are well on the way in the world of crunching here.

Re: UK

Thanks to you guys!

I've managed to get my GPU crunching two WU at the same time instead of just the one. I had it crunching 4 but I thought I will just see how two goes for the moment and see what the differences are.

Re: UK

One thing to note is to keep an eye on your CPU/GPU temperatures, if you're not already doing so; more so on laptops than desktops, but it's a good idea to check both periodically.

Re: UK

Yeah it's the reason I hibernate the laptop during the night. I don't want to risk it. Especially seeing some other threads on the Internet about overheating.
