Make guns more accessible and it's the burglar who will have the gun. Guns are an American problem - it's still the wild west. Actually, the example I gave above is a real world example that happened after our state made it easier to get a conceal carry permit. Note, that the burglar did not, in fact, have a gun. Also, if we're going to compare murder rates, you should include non-gun related rates as well. If a murder occurs, most of us are more concerned with the fact that the murder occurred, rather than what the murder ocurred with. Furthermore, I question the accuracy of the statement: "As many americans died from gunshot wounds from '79 to '97 as died in American wars" Do you have anything to back this up with? |

I prefer to get data from official sources, but I couldn't find any decent historical data on gun related deaths in the US. The CDC only had 2007 stats that I could find, and the gun control advocacy websites I came up with were difficult to navigate.
The US military however, was a tad more forthcoming with their statistics. So here you go. http://siadapp.dmdc.osd.mil/personnel/CASUALTY/state_oef_oif.pdf http://siadapp.dmdc.osd.mil/personnel/CASUALTY/WCPRINCIPAL.pdf Total US Military deaths: 1,010,138 Here's the data from the CDC. http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/homicide.htm All homicides •Number of deaths: 18,361 •Deaths per 100,000 population: 6.1 •Cause of death rank: 15 Firearm homicides •Number of deaths: 12,632 •Deaths per 100,000 population: 4.2 For reference: 36000 * 18 = 648000 |

Now how many gun related deaths are by criminals against other criminals.??? If 2 rival gangs wanna kill each other who cares? Saves about $40000 a year in prison care (old stats i'm sure its more now). I lived in a town where there were shootings every day. Probably 80% or more were in gangland. Now if they would only learn to keep their bullets from the innocents in the area.

Furthermore, I question the accuracy of the statement: "As many americans died from gunshot wounds from '79 to '97 as died in American wars" Do you have anything to back this up with? http://www.bradycampaign.org/media/press/view/289It's no consolation to the victims and their families that your official stats exclude accidental and other shootings (including justifiable; you know when someone knocks your door, shoot first). Between 1979 and 1991, more than 75,000 American children were killed by guns. Justify that... It's blatantly clear that they would not have died if guns were unavailable, but some people dig themselves a hole and bunker in with such blinding views that they will never permit themselves to see the blatantly obvious, no matter how many times and ways it's explained. I think this thread is extremely offensive to anyone who has had family or friends shot and has no place on the WCG site. Kindly remove it. |

skgiven, I see what you mean.
But a lot of people can be offended by a lot of things - as in: please don't mention cancer, it can make people sad ... (not the brightest of examples, admitted, but I trust you'll know what I mean) Keeping mum does not bring anybody back or solve any problems. Keeping mum only keeps things from being discussed openly. So, in the name of Freedom of Speech, I think the thread should remain. And the topic in all its aspects deserves to be discussed in a civil manner, in my opinion, as do all topics. Of course, if we cannot keep it civil, it's another matter altogether ![]() ![]() |

The problem with blinding views is equally true in the other direction.
The CDC numbers only include homicides, true. However, at the bottom of my previous post I used your figure of 36000/yr for 18 years. As noted, that's 648000, which is far less than the total number of US military deaths, which, from the data in the linked PDFs is over 1,000,000. |

Parents (Adults) should know better than keeping a loaded firearm in the house. Children should also be taught firearm safety (it's not a toy).
----------------------------------------While it's sad that children are killed while playing with firearms, it's mainly the parent/adult who is at fault. They do have gun safes, trigger locks, etc. to prevent these tragedies. All 3 of my children know how to shoot and proper firearm safety. I use mine to defend my house(family) and put food on the table. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
