Re: Why isn't WCG being crunched by the top BOINC participants ?

You also gotta keep in mind system requirements. Many find GPUGrids requirements to be an exclusive club. However, I'm finding this to be less true as more and more cards come down in price. Moo! appeals to some like me who have access to cards that are not capable to work elsewhere. A 128MB nVidia 8400 (yes a terrible choice to purchase today) can crunch there since they only require 64MB video ram for nvidia cards. The computer is not mine but the owner lets me use it. So, though I'm not strongly invested in the science, I still contribute. Some projects only use certain brand of cards. If GPUGrid opened up to AMD cards, they would probably get a lot more support. (So, they tap into that market with Donate@Home)

GPUGrid builds an AMD based version of their ACEMD app every time a new SDK is released and has worked with AMD but for the biomolecular processing done at GPUGrid AMD is about 10x slower than NVidia. So it's not that they don't want to utilize AMD, it's just that at this time doesn't make sense, kind of like trying to get non parallel apps shoehorned into a gpu.

Why isn't WCG being crunched by the top BOINC participants ?.

My guesses:
#1 through #1000 they're doing it for points
#1001 they're running GPU projects

http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/user/list/0/0/0

Not exactly but perhaps...I am #72, mikey, on that list! YES absolutely I have gpu's and they ABSOLUTELY produce the most points, they are fairly cheap and after some initial config issues can be good long term crunchers giving outstanding points! I crunched for Seti since 1999 and even before Boinc was released, ALL my Seti credits are from my cpu's. I now crunch for goals that have nothing to do with Science or Medicine but other things instead. For instance my son is now a PHD in Chemistry so I have crunched for some Chemistry related projects. My son programmed for a Boinc Project and so I crunched for it. Are points important, only when you get to the point that DO make a difference. I mean when I first started I was looking for 'little green men', now I am #72 in the whole Boinc World and I have 'aspirations' of 'moving on up'. Will there come a point where that is impossible, yes it is coming and when that happens I may go back to more project sensitive goals.

I initially started crunching because pc's are my hobby, I have been programming, very basically and long ago stopped, since 1978 and then learned how to make working ones from old broken ones. I even got to the point where I would take donated pc's and fix them up and give them to the Foster Kids at the local Family Services Agency so they would have SOMETHING to call their own! I STILL have half a dozen sitting on the floor here in my basement that could be up and running by the end of the day! I currently have 13 pc's running here at my home and all but 3 have gpu's in them that crunch! I fix up friends pc's and they either give me cash, gift cards or their old parts in return. I often kid saying 'the pc is scared of me and therefore it starts working on its own when it knows I am coming over to fix it', not true of course but MOST pc problems are user caused and a clean out and reboot really does fix them.

My problem here at WCG is the lack of 'badges' above the 2 year mark, give me SOME kind of recognition and 'goal' to shoot for and I could put more resources here. As it is I am crunching for HCC here, this there and something else someplace else. I am over 2 years on all the active badges, except the Beta one, and have been for a while now. I am over 4 years on 2 projects here. Sure it would be nice to conquer cancer, find the answer to clean water etc, etc but realistically those goals are not coming tomorrow or the next day, so keeping me interested and 'on task' is not as easy when there are LOTS of other Boinc Projects all competing for our resources.

Just part one mans opinion of why he crunches.

Recognition is nice but if you're doing this for points or badges then you're doing this for the wrong reasons IMHO.

Sort of IMHO... I originally started for the idea of what each project stood for, but as time went on and my stats and ability to provide more resources increased giving me even better stats, it is easier to do it for the stats. I am NOT saying I don't crunch for the idea of what each project stands for, or that my getting each badge to Sapphire means nothing to the Scientists, but it means something to me more than what the Science is all about. It takes on a different agenda as you move higher and higher up the ranks, at least for me. We all want to be good at something, I am good at providing resources to Boinc Projects that then use my resources as they see fit. I just now chose based on other than someone elses goals or aspirations. Here is a image of my current stats signature for all my Boinc projects. As you can see I have done well overall in the last nearly 13 years! BUT Cancer is STILL not cured, the common cold is still running around, Malaria is STILL killing people, etc, etc, ETC!!! Would ONE MORE unit someplace or other have fixed that, who knows, there is no way to know! So to me to obsess about what could be is not worth it and it is better to have more human goals instead, while always keeping the lofty goals in mind too!!!

I will tell you one thing, once an AMD GPU App for World Community Grid, I will be moving off of Milkway@home with my GPU and on to World Community Grid. I speculate that right now, people with AMD cards are crunching for AMD Projects, because there aren't alot of them compared to Nvidia.
