Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions

I've got a strange one here

I have one machine that will not let me access the forums or my profile. If I am logged in with user name and password, I cannot see either. If I shut down, clear browsing history and cookies, come back in to WCG from a fresh google, I can see the forums as a guest. As soon as I log in, the forums, profile, and other things that require membership does not work. I can still get in with my other computers. Also, I reset, uninstalled/reinstalled IE with same results. I installed firefox and I can get in. While I have workarounds, this bugs the heck out of me. Any Ideas? sad

Update: I tried access using Chrome and got a message "too many redirects, try deleting all cookies and try again". I tried, didn't work. But, Firefox is still working.

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions

Reads to me he spend time on Google and then revisiting WCG without success, in IE.

B21, never heard of before in the almost 8 years of WCG. IE... it's like risking your live, certainly your private information and passwords, don't use [I don't, period]. There's a major hijack bug doing the rounds now, with an emergency patch from MS due out today.

WCG addresses to the forums you can try out in the address bar:

https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/

When you can't see logged in screens, edit the address-bar, so if the address starts with https://secure. change it to http://www. then tell us if this makes a difference. Tried http://www. on the My Grid page and it continues to function. There could be a bug in the web-code that stops switching back to http:// which I understand is the preferred and faster address. https:// is only needed during log in and confirmation of e.g. profile changes. But, it's irrelevant really... it is supposed to work either way.

edit: On the Hijack risk, there is a MS FixIt program out now. Visit: http://blogs.msdn.com/b/securitytipstalk/arch...or-internet-explorer.aspx . Read carefully if this applies to you, the gentlemen in the below post too!

I effected the install of winUpdate a few minutes ago. It was a 1-item winUpdate: the (latest) definition-files for winDefender, but that one is unusually big for a winDefender definition-files: 3MB where I almost always have less than 1-MB there.

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions

I found that eve though my Firefox browser allowed me normal access, it had been hijacked by BABYLON. There was now "uninstall" showing anywhere so I manually purged all things Babylon from the computer and the registry. I reloaded Fire fox from the home org site and the hijack was gone. But still Win IE will not allow a WCG Login.

I'm going to ininstall IE and reinstall.

Thanks for the help-- will keep you posted

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions

ok, GAVE UP AND RELOADED THE OS.

Even after purging the registry, with all keys related to Babylon (and they were every where, using uninstall for every thing related, to any search brower, reloading Mozillia from the company site, reloading IE, Babylon still came back after a restart. If that's not malware, i don't know what is.

One thing I'd like to note: when you have a fast SSD for you system drive and all the drivers on hand, a reload is really not all that bad. Probably a 10th of the time I've spent on this problem.

Just doing my personal reloads -- be back up soon.

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions [RESOLVED]

A little search popped up detailed help how to remove this pest. Here's one: http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLB6595A00CD2432E1

From reading what you did you seem to have followed steps per other googled help. Sorry that any of those did not work, but good you've found the cause.

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions [RESOLVED]

I watched two of these before I decided to do a fresh install. If you watch them all the way through, they simply show you how hard it is to get it all, and then offer to sell you a product that will do it for you. I think they call this "extrotion ware".

I suspect that there are related files in the registry with names different that the obvious that bring this back. Very easy for someone to code, impossible to find.

It seems to be gone now and you can but that I will be avoiding anything that looks like, smells like, sounds like Babylon or PlayBryte forever.

Re: Srange but annoying problem -- looking for suggestions [RESOLVED]

Actually, I think I owe the WCG website a debt of gratitude. If not for the odd problem connecting to the forum and Chrome queing me by telling me with the message "too many redirects" I would have still been living with an unknown infection.

Thaks for the help. smile
