I have to stand up for the pup since he is not with us tonight..The quickest that I have seen one of the 64's complete a work unit is 44 minutes...I just completed one on a 2800 Athlon in 78 minutes about 30 minutes ago...These work units vary from day to day for me...

Hello Mousie & Guru,
The wu's today certainly have been all over the place. At the same time that 92 min. unit was running on the 3 gig P4 (a HP laptop, BTW), another was chugging along on a 2.6 gig P4 that looks like it will take at least 20 hours to finish. You really can't predict how long they will take as you d/l them. I also have an AMD 64 3200+ that, so far hasn't run anything under 2 hours. I'm not at all sure that the AMD fpu advantage is that big a factor in running Rosetta. As long as you have a cpu that runs @ 2 Ghz or better, running time is more determined by the makeup of thw wu rather than the speed of the chip. The only sure way to tell would be to benchmark comparable Intel and AMD chips using exactly the same wu. I know some people did that over at UD using cancer units as a test. Someone who knows how should run a similar comparison here at WCG. Mousie, I really don't want to get into a Windows vs Linux argument here but I don't agree with you about Linux running WCG faster, for the same reasons stated above. The OS shouldn't have much to do with the app, regardless of the overhead. The hardware itself is the bigger factor over the OS. As long as HPF is run without the screensaver in Windows, it should run at pretty much the same speed as the command line version that's planned for Linux. Just to be clear, Windows works for me and does everything I need it to so I see no need to change. I have nothing against Linux or Mac OS's. They, I'm sure, work just as well for those who prefer them. I do, however, have issues with some of the folks who use those OS's. They can be exceedingly obnoxious and rude in their bashing of Microsoft, supposedly believing that by acting this way they will win converts to their causes. They won't. Their behavior does more harm than good. Rant over. Get some sleep, Mousie. See you tomorrow. |

in the end, mousie just likes stirring the pot
----------------------------------------![]() ![]() i like being able to play a bit...linux allows better for that. i'm normally one to say whatever works for a person, go ahead and stick with it...except for when people poke at me for preferring something they don't. hence my earlier statement, blame it on big V, ![]() linux works for me...i have all the apps i need for free which would have costed a pretty penny had i been using windows...either that or all sorts of pirating. probably one of the bigger reasons for my preference. as far as os overhead affecting wcg performance...all i know is what i've said based on benchmarking the same machine on both os's. one does considerably better than the other. guess we'll see what happens when the actual linux app comes out, though since units aren't the same, it wouldn't be too easy to check... I've thought about using Linux many times over the last few years. Got a lot of distros from magazines and even bought a couple outright (Red Hat 7 & Mandrake 8.1), but after reading the install guides I thought that I just didn't need to work that hard.
![]() Last December I almost bought a Mac. Went into the Apple store on Michigan Ave. to try them out but most of them were crashed and the staff was too busy to help. I was looking at the $800 eMac, their entry level machine at the time, but was wholly unimpressed. A week later I got an eMachines pc for $600 (w/o Monitor) that had an Athlon XP 3200+, 512 Mhz RAM, 160 Ghz HD, DVD writer, CD-ROM drive, deluxe keyboard, the whole nine yards, and would positively beat the snot out of the eMac. I don't even want to talk about that overpriced paperweight that is the MiniMac. By all reliable accounts, the Mac OS is very capable, but the hardware is priced beyond reason for what it is. Be interesting to see what happens to Apple's pricing structure once they're running on Intel chips because then they won't have a justifiable case for being higher priced than HP or Dell. BTW, the main reason I didn't get a Mac was that I couldn't run UD on it! My issues with overzealous Linux & Mac users come from sparring with them in net forums. I subscribe to several news alerts from ZDnet and each of the stories has a forum attached to it to discuss the articles. It never fails that when a story about MS appears, the same crowd of mostly Linux fanboys show up to dominate the forum, spewing the same old anti MS venom. Mind you, most of these articles make no mention of Linux or even hint at it, but these clowns are still there. If anyone dares to even feebly support MS, they get flamed mercilessly. Some of the Mac guys can be just as bad. Like I said before, none of this boorishness would make me want to switch. If anything, just the opposite. I wouldn't want to be associated with jerks like them in any way. Are we the only nightowls tonight? To Guru, Forgot to mention it before 'cause I was involved in my rant, but I should catch vaio soon, overcoming his headstart on me. But that's probably as high as I can go. You and the others above me have more firepower so I'll be happy with 4th place on the team. Just doin' what I can to help the team and the cause. |
