Success in first phase of human trials for colorectal cancer vaccine
The new vaccine treatment is designed to stimulate a patient's immune system to attack and destroy the cancer. [. . .] The big breakthrough that inspired this specific vaccine was the discovery that almost all colorectal cancers seem to express a molecule called GUCY2C. This particular molecule is also found naturally in intestinal epithelial cells, however, its compartmentalized presence in those cells means any vaccine that targets it should only direct immune cells to tumors and not healthy intestinal tissue. Existing drug that offers metastatic cell dormancy over death may be better for combating cancer
Current cancer drugs tend to target primary tumors because they're made to focus in on cells that are growing faster than normal cells. But that means they miss the metastatic cells that may be circulating through a patient's body, which can lie inactive for years at a time. Rather than find a way to kill these rogue traveling cancer cells, the new study investigated how to keep them in that inactive state. In tests on mice with breast cancer, the team found that a drug called fostamatinib can do the trick. Biological barrier could keep cancer from metastasizing
Researchers at EPFL, the University of Bern and the Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics have discovered a particular protein signaling pathway that controls whether a tumor can spread or not, making it a good target for future drugs. The research focused on a cell receptor called ALK7, studying its role in mice with breast cancer or pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors. The team discovered that when activated by the protein activin B, ALK7 triggers a signaling pathway that can kill cancer cells through the process of apoptosis, as well as suppressing metastasis, and preventing new tumors from forming (tumoriogensis). [. . . ] Higher levels of ALK7 expression in human cancer patients seemed to line up with periods of remission. In other cases, higher levels were found to keep breast cancer metastasis at bay for longer. Scorpion venom is helping surgeons detect brain cancer
The new imaging technique is based around a novel compound called tozuleristide (BLZ-100, which is an optimized synthetic version of a peptide found in scorpion venom. The compound naturally binds to [glioma] brain cancer cells, and researchers added a fluorescent dye so under near-infrared light the tumor cells become easily distinguishable from normal tissue. "With this fluorescence, you see the tumor so much clearer because it lights up like a Christmas tree," explains Adam Mamelak, senior author on the new research. Google's AI for lung cancer diagnosis proves more accurate than radiologists in early trial
In Google's case, it trained its machine learning algorithm on more than 45,000 chest CT scans, taken from the National Health Institute and Northwestern University, some of which featured cancer in various stages. The algorithm works by generating a 3D model from the CT scan, using that to detect tiny malignant tissue in the lung nodules that would otherwise be difficult to spot and produce an overall lung cancer malignancy prediction. The algorithm was then put to work using a single CT scan for diagnosis, with the accuracy of the algorithm compared to that of six board-certified radiologists. New in the detection of bladder carcinomas. A specific and effective urine test could identify these tumors.

It consists in identifying two recurrent mutations in this type of tumor associated with the telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) gene. These can be observed in cells present in the urine but in small quantities. This is why the test is particularly sensitive. A non-invasive test To validate its effectiveness, the team of Dr. Florence Le Calvez-Kelm of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) evaluated 93 patients diagnosed and 94 control participants in France, as well as 50 patients and 50 controls in Portugal . Results, "the test was very sensitive and specific to the detection of all forms of urothelial cancers," says the researcher. He even managed to identify low-grade and early forms. "This test could significantly improve the screening of these cancers and avoid many unnecessary invasive procedures such as cyctoscopy," she says.
