Re: MOT is stronger than ever...

Dave - you are a .... "GLOBAL TALENT". You have fans all over the world, and now you are teaching the Germans how to cook saurkraut shock shock
What is next .... The Czechs pilsner, the Scots Haggis and Bannocks... and Sechellois how to grill fish lol

I am glad you enjoy your food and drink, but most of all I am impressed at the way you prepare it - with much passion. Keep it up! One doesn't meet too many people with that kind of genes these days biggrin biggrin - their proteins got folded the other way wink

Robert --

Don't go giving me ideas -- LOL! I do like pilsner, but it would be difficult to improve on what they already brew in Pilsn. Don't worry about my improving on what I would expect to be great seafood you get back home either. I do love fish, but I am pretty basic when it comes to cooking it. Haggis has yet to have made an appeal to me, so the Scots can rest easy too (can't make Scotch whiskey either as it is not legal to make distilled alcohol here). I think I will stick to my kraut and beer pretty much biggrin

Re: MOT is stronger than ever...

I hope the next WCG client for Windows will be hyperthreading-aware,
two Rosetta tasks would use up 100% then. My new workstation with two
2.8 GHz Xeons (comes on Wednesday) will be rated even lower although it
has much more power... it will use only 25% of the CPUs under Windows
so for now I will run 4 virtual Windows tasks cool cool cool cool

You know that hyperthreading is basically a trick that a fast processor plays on Windows, right? Helpful in certain circumstances, but it doesn't help a bit in situations like these. Even though Task Manager reports 50% CPU usage, it's really a quirk of Windows that shows that result. Have no fear; you truly are using 100% of your CPU's capabilities, not just 50%... it's just that Task Manager gives an incorrect read of the true situation.

True dual-processor machines are a different story. Those report things properly. And rest assured, I have noticed that while the "ratings" of the computer aren't super impressive, my dual processor machines routinely turn in much higher scores than the single-processor machines... much moreso than their speed ratings would seem to indicate. So try not to get too hung up on CPU usage and instead look at the actual results you are getting.

Not exactly -- 2 seti@home clients run at 180% on a HT CPU compared to
only 1 client. As a single thread can only use one HT pipeline, things speed
up when workload can be spread between multiple threads. On Windows
the same seems to happen -- the WCG client uses only one pipeline while
the other is used by the idle task. If we could start a second client it would
also work and the resulting output would increase. I will prove this by
running 4 virtual VMware machines on a dual XEON workstation soon
(compared to the output of 1 WCG client under native W2K).

Mine shows 50% for Rosetta and 50% for idle, this seems correct from the
number of points I get per 24h vs. what I was expecting.

Best, Stefan.

Dave --

It goes well with my homebrew. I just cracked open a second bottle for the afternoon. My, oh my! Maybe I won't be able to teach the Czechs how to make pilsner, but the Brits better worry! Tis' a fine ale I have brewed -- LOL

Your friend and team mate,
