Well, PoppaGeek, I don't know about other Ripple team members, but with or without getting XRPs as a reward, I'm staying. If my computer, together with other people's, can help make a tiny bit of good, then why would I stop that?

As a cruncher who saw an opportunity to make a small amount of money doing what I already was doing for 2 years, I guess I have to say goodbye to my free money.
----------------------------------------On the bright side though, through a XRP to Bitcoin Exchange, I managed to make around around $28 USD (in Bitcoin -> USD prices as of 03/31/2014), for doing absolutely nothing but contributing to a grid I have learned to love. Ripple Labs may leave from my team tag, but WCG is still going strong on my computer. |

Dear members, we are thankful to Ripple Labs for creating the Computing for Good initiative and introducing many new volunteers to World Community Grid. Throughout Ripple Labs' time as a World Community Grid partner, we communicated regularly and exchanged ideas for improvements. Ripple Labs recently alerted us that they were facing some technical issues, and we were working with them to resolve any that were within our control. We did not anticipate that our recent website updates would have any impact on their points calculation system, since we did not make any changes to our API, the recommended method for gathering contribution data. We're sorry to see the Computing for Good initiative end, and would be happy to work with Ripple Labs again in the future if they, or a 3rd party partner, would like to restart Computing for Good. We will also be contacting members that were new to World Community Grid as a result of the Ripple Labs initiative to encourage them to continue donating their device power to help advance our outstanding research programs.
We thank you all for your dedicated support! |

There have been previous attempts like CfG. Unfortunately, it was just a matter of time before it met the same fate. Once again, we see that true altruism cannot be bought. The scale of what CfG did accomplish has been most impressive though. It's had a huge impact on the amount of work done and exposed a large number of people to crunching and to WCG. Some number of them will understand the good of WCG and keep crunching. It's really good to read that WCG plans to reach out directly to these new folks and encourage them to stay with us. It will be a good thing no matter how many do stay but clearly the more the better! Let me add my encouragement for what it's worth. I've been crunching here since the beginning, well two days after the beginning, and I can't imagine not crunching. We've made a difference that will be measured in lives. It really is something special to be able to say that too. To those new to WCG via Ripple, please stick around. Get to know us better. You'll be glad you stayed. There are quite a few very active teams here. Join one of them. Admittedly I'd prefer you join MOT but the point is to join one of them. You'll get to know the comraderie that is unique to a team. We have our differences but we're all here for reasons that are far, far similar. Those reasons unite us irrregardless of any differences. Here, we can feel at home - a global home.

This confirms the point quoted above: If "the website changes broke our point calculation system" this suggests to me that they were screen scrapping. If so, then they missed/ignored knreed's warning some months ago that this would happen. Shame on Ripple for trying to shift the blame for the failure of their points calculation system onto WCG ![]() |

You're spot on. I'm one of those who discovered WCG by the team of Ripple Labs and definitely will continue donating computing power to some good cases. The only thing, besides the technical issue, that one could regret in the cooperation is the "one way advertising". RL did a great job to attract users for WCG, but I missed some active "thumbs up" in the other direction. Never understood why, as the RL project is also very much community orientated and may, just like WCG, help for a better world too. Just one example: Third world economies suffer a lot from Western financial control. Systems like Ripple want to, and will, give them a chance to take a bit of control to their own. Like the internet gave some communicating power back to the crowd, systems like Ripple will create a cheap and fast way to move & exchange values over the internet without control by any intermediate like banks, market makers....
So in my view there should be nothing wrong with supporting RL with some extra noise in the WCG community... |

I compute because they are too many humans alive and not enough of them bother to think intelligently.

Adding to my previous comment, I sometimes had the impression that Ripple Labs team members seemed to be viewed by other teams as opportunistic money makers and donating only for the reward. Speaking for myself, and I believe for many other of our group members, this surely is not the case. I even think that my energy bill growth is above the XRP/USD reward that I earned. Is was clearly cheaper just to buy those 2500 XRP for under 25$. The combination of WCG and Ripple gave me rather the feeling that I was "Computing on 2 bodies for good". And on top of that the earned XRP/USD might have been useful for other donations.
By not accepting the XRPs, it's just the electric facility to profit yet? Reusing the reward makes their energy less wasted too ... |

jhindo We did not anticipate that our recent website updates would have any impact on their points calculation system, since we did not make any changes to our API, the recommended method for gathering contribution data. If so, then they missed/ignored knreed's warning some months ago that this would happen. Shame on Ripple for trying to shift the blame for the failure of their points calculation system onto WCG ![]() Actually, one of the things said in the announcement by RL here, was this: 4) The WCG API used in the giveaway architecture is sometimes unreliable, which disrupts timely payouts. I think they know better than to confuse screen scrapping with an API - at least I hope so. But if everything is now fixed, and WCG is really ready to welcome RL back, making the necessary adjustments on the RL side should be a trivial matter. In fact, most of the other reasons they gave: 1) World Community Grid changed its website several days ago, which in turn broke our point calculation system because we relied on the website to perform payout calculations. 2) Computing for Good led to a small set of community members setting up mining operations to maximize their daily take - 1% of the participants earn 50% of the XRP disbursed daily. 3) We've also seen a small set of team members brute force attack other World Community Grid (WCG) accounts to register others’ computing time for their own XRP redemption. This activity is unacceptable and unfair to team members who just want to do good. really sound like issues that WCG had, not RL. Number 2 seems especially bogus since that was nothing new and something that could easily be remedied by just putting a cap on payouts per person per day. Of course there are ways around that but alternatively they could just reduce the payout rate to a level that makes it unprofitable to rent cloud computing time. Anyway, there are potential problems with every giveaway strategy so I have a hard time believing #2 was actually a consideration. No, all of those so-called "reasons" seem easily dealt with - unless of course the departure of RL was really WCG's decision and not theirs. ![]() ![]() |
