No, I do not know that. I wrote what I believed. You are entitled to your opinion as I am to mine. I do agree with you that many researchers are grossly underfunded.
Cheers

Re: Computing for Good being phased out

That's good to know, but we got a little sidetracked. The real point is that it's foolish to EVER take public statements at face value. They're made for PR purposes, not to give you the full story. In order to do that you have to willing as well as able to read between the lines and recognize alternative explanations, especially if the one you're being offered doesn't seem to fit ALL of the facts.

This explanation doesn't fit the facts. For 1 and 4, RL could easily fix whatever problem they had with the API. For 2, we've seen that the issue of a small number of people getting a disproportionate amount of the daily payout has been an "issue" ever since the giveaway started. And for 3, the hacking issue was never even RL's responsibility. In addition, that problem has been acknowledged as solved.

As I've said repeatedly, it was a nice attempt by RL to accept the blame but that's all it really is. In addition, they put a lot of effort into creating something that they have no logical reason to abandon.

My main point is that the whole list is bogus - at least from RL's perspective. But if you look at from WCG's, it makes a lot more sense. The items in the list are framed as being reasons for RL but it seems much more likely to me that they were reasons for WCG - WCG didn't want to come off as the heavy so rather than be kicked off the project, RL agreed to leave "on their own."

I disagree. It makes no sense that WCG would want to get rid of a huge resource for getting the research done. WCG dealt with the hacking accounts issue, which turned out to be a singular instance. It was not a reflection of the Ripple labs team, but probably of a lone individual. Therefore it appears to this is purely a Ripple Labs decision.

I thought we would be seeing an exodus of the Ripple Labs members already, but so far that has not happened. I applaud those who are staying as the XRP payment is being phased out.
Cheers

I am with you Sgt.Joe. I also trust in WCG's explanation and not at all in RL's one. WCG is trusted organization supporting mankind for a lot of years. RL just started to claim their only intention is to make the World better place. Form anything I was able to see, I still don't know for who thinking

And after several months of running the New-age-currency-system, they are still in Beta phase... I guess some WCG members will say this is also their (WCG' and IBM's) fault.

Cheers peace

I'm sure you'll find some who say that but I haven't seen any on any of the Ripple related forums. However I have seen several comments that express incredulity at Ripple's explanation - because it doesn't make sense.

Of course I guess just one person does constitute some.

Re: Computing for Good being phased out

I'd like to chime in on a few comments made in this thread:

No, all of those so-called "reasons" seem easily dealt with - unless of course the departure of RL was really WCG's decision and not theirs.

I can only speak for World Community Grid's actions and intentions. So let me reiterate what I said previously, in case I wasn't clear enough. We didn't realize Ripple Labs wasn't using our APIs for their points calculation system, which is why we didn't anticipate that our recent website changes would break anything on their end. Nothing on our end has changed: we've always been supportive of the Ripple Labs partnership and we've maintained communications with them throughout and continue to do so.

While it's a shame they decided to end the Computing for Good initiative, but we're thankful that it introduced so many to World Community Grid. Rather than passing judgement or blame, we're focusing our efforts on appealing to current Ripple Labs team members to continue their support.

You're assuming that WCG has a vested interest in trying to expand its reach

We very much do! Our extensive member study last year identified key areas of growth for us - namely expanding the appeal of World Community Grid to new audiences, particularly those who don't have deep technical expertise and might not be familiar with the concept of volunteer computing, yet care about the humanitarian issues we support. Our recent website release with the more modern look & feel, updated content and new assets (like our new video) to explain who are and what volunteer computing is all about, is one way we hope to expand our reach. We wouldn't have invested in such drastic changes if we didn't wish to grow.

I expect this post to be deleted shortly Alan, so I hope you get the chance to see it.

twilyth - unless you break our forum rules, there's no reason for us to edit or delete a comment, even if we don't agree with it.. You're entitled to your opinions (and conspiracy theories smile )

One thing that no one can take away from me, I joined on the very first day, just as I joined on the first day that UD started......I had been with SETI but thought this form of DP was more beneficial than looking for little green men! wink devilish

Re: Computing for Good being phased out

@ jhindo
Thankyou for the post above. smile I recall that when the new Communications features were unveiled we were promised "New behind-the-scenes stories from the World Community Grid team" This wasn't quite what I expected but it's a step in the right direction. More please! smile

[OT] Whilst News has solved the problem of "important research updates.... buried in a forum thread" other important information of interest to the wider community is still being buried in forum threads and the retirement of the Known Issues thread hasn't helped.
Re: Error reported by file upload server: No space left on server
Well, and we could read all that in a brief in-client notification. Or is it so HARD to implement?
is an example to prove my point. The new communications features are great in many ways but without a seachange in WCG communications policy i.e. what, and how, information is shared with members, they're just gilding the lily!

More work is needed!
[/OT]

I find it amazing that "Ripple Labs wasn't using our APIs for their points calculation system" It appears to me to have been a very amateur setup. knreed's warning about the impact of future changes to the website vis a vis screen scrapping was right on the mark and I, and others, were able to implement the necessary changes in good time.

Member retention is, and has always been, critical to the success of WCG and so I applaud "focusing our efforts on appealing to current Ripple Labs team members to continue their support". I'll be watching, with interest, how this succeeds once CfG finally ends.

Finally I find your last paragraph reassuring. twilyth's posts whilst they may arouse the ire of some, should never be dismissed out of hand. Whilst I might not agree with some of their content, they are always thought provoking and, providing they are within forum guidelines, should be allowed to stand. If nothing else they make for a lively discussion in the forum. wink

ryan: Thanks for the info

jhindo: I'm sure every time someone sees an incongruity between official statements and facts you would like to call it a conspiracy theory. That's fine - it's not like I expect you to admit what actually happened. And if you would like to denigrate me personally by making certain veiled allegations, please do. I imagine that with your job you need some amusement from time to time.

I learned long ago that the first priority people have is to CYA. I'm sure you're nothing special as far as that goes.

Re: Computing for Good being phased out

It's a shame they're discontinuing this. Computing for Good was a good way to earn some extra money with no extra effort. But I was participating on WCG long time before Ripple arrived and I will continue regardless of what Ripple does.
Now I'm trying an alternative to CfG ( https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/team/viewTeamInfo.do?teamId=6PWSZF8V32 ), but it's just starting so we'll see if it's any good.
