Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I believe Charity engine main user base doesn't know about BOINC at all. They simply download the software (which is BOINC) and sign up to the account manager (Charity Engine, that is). Then they just keep crunching whatever generates donations (I know Bitcoins is one of them) and when they don't have that work, other projects like Rosetta and I think Einstein too, go from backup projects to main ones, until they get work back again. Either way, would be nice if WCG could get into this.

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I want to share my experience. I consider myself a Long-Term Cruncher since I’ve been doing DC since 2002 (WCG since Dec. 2005). During all this years I’ve used all kinds of computers, from a Sun Workstation all the way to a tablet. In the early years I used mostly desktops, but since 2007-2008 I started switching to laptops, and all of them crunched for WCG, from an Atom netbook to my current Haswell i7. But I’ve come to the conclusion that the toll on mobile devices is too high. Some of those laptops have been damaged in some way for running BOINC 24/7 (I always use a very conservative profile for laptops, setting max CPU usage at low values, between 25% and 40%). After a while I decided to stop using laptops for DC. At the moment my only contribution comes from a couple of ancient Pentium 4 desktops. I know it’s not much and probably not worth the cost of electricity, but it’s the best I can comfortably do today.
With this I don’t want to discourage anyone on using laptops for crunching, but that’s the reason for my particular decline in contribution. I don’t know if I will ever buy another desktop, but until then I can only provide around 3.5 gflops of computing power to WCG (as per today’s SNURK’s WCGSIG stats).

for me throtling laptops down to 70-80% od CPu power will do the trick in Croatia...and here temp go up to 40C in Zagreb, Croatia, EU... ;)

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I've been using my laptop since 2007 (mostly 24/7/365). I've found that with TThrottle installed it maintains a preset temp. Currently it's only running at 40% (it's 75F inside house atm).

edit: added "F" to temp.

cool Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

Also, another suggestion:
- group mailing & social theme posting for "Country milestones" & "team milestones"...when every country gets to:
a) time milestones: 90d,180d,1y,2y,5y,10y,20y,50y,100y,200y,500y,1millenia, 2m,5m,1kilennium,2k,5k,1centrennium,2c,5c,1megaannum,2m,5m,10m,20m,50m,100m,200m,500m,1aeon,2a,5a,10
a,20a,50a,100a,200a,500a,1trillienium,...
b) points milestones: 100,200,500,1k,2k,5k,10k,20k,50k,100k,200k,500k,1m,2m,5m,10m,20m,50m,100m,200m,500m,1b,2b,5b,10b,20b
,50b,100b,200b,500b,...
c) results milestones: 10,20,50,100,200,500,1k,2k,5k,10k,20k,50k,100k,200k,500k,1m,2m,5m,10m,20m,50m,100m,200m,500m,1b,...

So that is says:
"member KLiK (or Luka Xxxxxxx) is contrinuting his computer power for finding solutions for helping cure cancer (depending on the sellected projects) and has contributed XY% to 200.000.000 (200m) points for Croatia. With this mail (social post/image) we thank KLiK for contributing his computer power to WCG & science.
Do you want to join him (link on member)?
"

Of course all options for "mailings & posting on social" have to be selected...some of us are using multiple computers, so we could quickly become SPAMMERS (like on Facebook)...
But I do know that some people joined WCG 'cause of the Facebook posting on my profile that were automated...and about 1% of my friends asked me about WCG: what is it? how to participate? etc.
cool

group mailing & social theme posting for "Country milestones" & "team milestones".

Anything along these lines would be very wekcome! biggrin

In their response to the 2013 Member Survey WCG said:
Leverage teams more effectively
Teams can provide a valuable sense of community and inclusion, but many members feel that teams are not receiving enough attention and support. We hope to address this by:

Allowing you to compete with similar teams, for example by providing the option to restrict team challenges to teams of similar size.
Giving team captains more control over team leadership along with more responsibilities in managing their teams, but also the ability to share that responsibility with co-captains.
Standardizing and improving team-level recognition, showcasing team participation more clearly and enabling you to share team-building best practices.

A year on, and apart from some minor tinkering with the existing mechanics of Team Challenges, nothing has changed. sad It's too much to expect WCG to update us on progress so we can only hope that something is somewhere in the pipeline!

[OT] I agree with many of your earlier posts about recognising individual achievements & milestones and creating interaction with Social Media. My post here might be of interest. I acknowledge that it's no substitute for WCG doing it properly and encompassing all members and, of course, there's no social media interaction, but at least there's some recognition for members achieivements within the confines of the forum.

Re: Retention of 'Long-Term' Crunchers.

I have had occasion in the past to rant somewhat about fixing the points system.

Maybe the issue is not so much it is broken rather there are glitches.... ~Things that need addressing....

Now this particular one is to my advantage but it should give a feel for things that need attention to benefit us crunchers...

If 1,091.7 is the average of my rig and another I have to ask what kind of rig is claiming 1887 pts per ~10 hour task/188pts/hr vs my 15.2 pts/hr claim

Tell me again it is not broken and this is how it should be

My wu claimed 300.1 and was awarded 1132.6, while the wingman claimed 561.5 and was awarded 323.6!

It's nonsense! while CEP2 has no tasks, I've moved to other projects, with this issue I question if it's worth returning when work is available...

I know the points are not the important thing, however, if they can't be bothered to fix the issue, can we be bothered to crunch for them?

The thing to remember about CEP2 is the even though the work units are identical, the points in CEP2 are not averaged between the two wingmen. The points are awarded based on how much work was accomplished by the machine. One machine may have finished only 2 or 3 of the jobs and the other may have completed all the jobs. I will say that for OLD Chap to get 99.58 points per hour is very good. That particular job may be an anomaly for him, but I wonder what his average points per hour is for that machine on CEP2.
Cheers
