I started on F@H and moved to another team when the others around me fell by the wayside. So I guess there is something in me that enjoys the community aspect of crunching. F@H became a problem for me when, despite numerous requests from the people crunching, It became a case of really flaky software and points that were not consistent or so it seemed to me and numerous others. The last straw was that I was having to replace hardware all too often when it was pressed too far beyond its design capabilities. That was then and I migrated to WCG as a result. If any of that applies to WCG now then I begin to have a problem.
----------------------------------------Without my team membership I would have cut right back or stopped by now when I see it take many days for staff to acknowledge issues noted by the members. If it is points or badge related, even though these are both part of the core of WCG, there seems to be little interest in finding a solution. How long did it take to bring the new badge idea online? Technically I find there are a number of little niggles which individually are just annoying but together make me wonder if the staff are at all concerned with retaining folks like us. When crunching can be as interesting as watching paint dry, fiddling with settings is something for some of us to inject a different type of challenge. Finding this had been blocked by design is just annoying to me. I continue because I like to think that between us we can help find that snippet of information that will point science toward better treatment of disease or better ways to progress. I enjoy the camaraderie of my team but while we are supporting WCG I do at times feel that WCG is not supporting us. I hope you guys understand that I am just throwing my point of view out there. I do not consider that it is either right or wrong..... It is just the way I feel about things at the moment ![]() |

Thanks for providing your viewpoint OldChap. I would venture to say many people who contribute here and actually take an interest in the community as opposed to those who just install and forget, feel much the same way. I certainly do.
----------------------------------------While many of the teams here provide a strong base of support for the members who belong to them, the fact of the matter is that people who belong to this community should be able to find that support here on this forum. Beyond that, while there is much that we can do to support one another, aside from the fact that we have to do that offline because of the pathetic state of this forum software, there is a great deal that requires the participation of the WCG staff. And while they normally respond quickly to brush fires such as system failures, virtually everything else seems to take years if it happens at all. And I strongly suspect that the only reason they are so responsive to the system issues is because that's their actual job and it reflects badly on them if they don't. Personally I've gotten to the point where I regard them much like I did old version of my state's DMV - slow, lethargic and resistant to change. I used to dread going there since I knew no matter how minor and insignificant whatever I needed from them they would somehow manage to turn it into a task worthy of Mission Impossible. However so many people in the state became so dissatisfied with the state of service that the agency was completely restructured and the last couple of times I've gone there it was actually a pleasant experience. The last time was just a few days ago to renew my registration since there was some confusion about my tags. I was in and out in under 15 minutes. But that only happened because a) people cared enough to complain and b) because the govt cared enough to do something about it. I'm afraid that we can look forward to neither of those things happening with WCG. There seem to be only a handful of us that actually give a s*** about what happens here and IBM's level of interest is questionable at best. The continued existence of this PoS forum software is sufficient proof of that fact. ![]() ![]() |

Well they did respond quickly with th new BADGES (diamond ones)...and that is GREAT!
----------------------------------------What we now need is a tool for ADVERTISING our work...'cause if we ADVERTISE our work - new people will come! It's nice that they gave us the link to "Join the TEAM"...but will I be posting that on 2000 e-mails that I got in my correspondence? NO! So...even though the idea of giving extra 5-50% more proints from Scribe is OK...it's not FAIR game! For many of us, RECOGNITION with ADVERTISING is the key of success! I will stick here if I get recognition...if my friend calls me and asks me: "What is that WCG thing on your Facebook/Tweeter/Instagram/Google+ profile?" I will get him started, join my team & we can crunch together...making better community around ourselves...when he gets the same RECOGNITION, somebody would ask him...and we will all become better! Yes, it sound like MLM, but isn't...MLM got some good ideas: social networking (Facebook, Tweeter, etc.), spoken word, 1on1, etc....'cause not many of us joined WCG (or any other) without some information...I had to check all these infos myself, 'cause none of the people were around in Croatia... Also, I said it many times: if IBM is serious about this project...it would give us discounts for participating in this project...for every million credits, give us $100 worth of discount up to 20% of the price of the product... Why? 1. We would use that products for further WCG crunching & make this even greater project. 2. IBM sells, to partners (participants). 3. this concept would even draw in many CORPs into the WCG...with their was amounts of CPU power...'cause of the discounts from IBM! All happy...nobody looses! And you can get this done with current infrastructure...IBM has offices around the whole world...and we can "print out" discounts from this page - downloadable. Many of these ideas exists...but will somebody in WCG/IBM hear us? ---------------------------------------- [Edit 1 times, last edit by KLiK at Jul 28, 2014 6:03:29 AM] |

IBM hasn't manufactured consumer hardware for a while now. I'm not sure how many years exactly but they I think they sold their PC business to Lenovo about 10 years ago and I think they sold their server business to them last year. They are essentially a computer services company and have been such for many years.
----------------------------------------Not only that, but their sales have been flat for the past 6 years. The only reason that their earnings per share continue to grow is that they borrow money at low interest rates and buy back their own stock. So IBM as a company really isn't doing all that well. They're definitely not going to start throwing cash around to folks like us. Heck, they won't even increase staff at WCG - something I'd much rather see than have them give anything to us. ![]() ![]() |

The idea was born back when IBM was co-producing desktops & laptops with Lenovo...there is my post, back at 2005 or 2006... Than only Servers were left at IBM...still nothing happened...now they sell them, but also continuing transition to Lenovo...sadly, but we could have "earned discounts on server with crunching"... Now they do only data, clouds, etc...nothing that WCG users could benefit from...a WCG only remains a cloud of crunching data... Probably they think their way is the best way...that is great! Also, have you noticed how HTC got a nice article: http://www.htc.com/us/about/newsroom/2014/201...r-with-htc-power-to-give/ What IBM got from WCG? And we still wait for the Techs to come and write a few words... :/ |

Looked in google play store and thought 'what is familiar about this logo?' The htc ptg is a rebranded boinc agent for android. The video presented on gps names 5 most recently running wcg projects + seti of dr anderson's, i.e. they advertise to contribute to wcg. Would ibm/wcg not have participated in this program development?
----------------------------------------![]() What's of interest is, that the ptg agent can be installed on htc one's and is shown as incompatible with my tablet. They show having updated to android 4.4.3 kitkat, so wonder if they're running the same science apps or an adapted version and what their stability experience is? Certainly these 'one's can be found on wuprop i.e. there's liberty to add other projects to those agents. HTC Desire HD 12.0 (9.4 - 14.6) HTC j 8.2 (8.2 - 8.2) HTC One M7 6.3 (5.2 - 7.3) HTC One M8 8.3 (5.0 - 14.3) HTC One mini 8.1 (5.2 - 12.8) HTC Thunderbolt 18.0 (18.0 - 18.0) [Edit 2 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 28, 2014 10:51:47 AM] |

----------------------------------------NO! And you keep asking why people leave? LoL They don't get CREDIT for what they've DONE here! |

In what form would you like to be recognized ? Would an email congratulating you for your contribution suffice ? A certificate of appreciation ? A coupon for 1/2 off on your next cup of coffee ? A credit towards your electric bill ? A squeezable stress relief toy with the WCG logo ? Please be specific with how you think the accomplishment of particular goals should be recognized, either to you privately or to the world publicly. BTW you have my admiration for crunching well done. Cheers

One way to do it is to have an area in the banner that randomly lists people and their milestones for the past few weeks. I paid Free-DC to do something like that on their site for a year for WCG and Bok didn't seem to have much trouble coding that up and getting it on line.
----------------------------------------This is why I always laugh when WCG staff always claim that they don't have the time. If you're actually a competent coder, things like this don't take any time at all. Often they are a single sql query where the only real work is formatting the output. Yeah, real tough, time consuming work. Bull****. These are excuses people use when they have no interest in helping you. ![]() ![]() |
