Re: Much Longer WUs

Most who run with ten days of downloads are oblivious to what they are doing......

Also, it doesn't really matter in the long run. All workunits will get crunched and that is all that really matters. After a while we get used to the "No Reply" workunits and realize it's just part of the deal.

As deltavee said above i dont mind
the more i interfere the less i understand.I let it crunch what it gets either shorts or longs-some getting ''too late" others "no reply"
But still hope to get a one year badge at least one day sad

Don't worry, you will make it to emerald just fine... I'm currently trying to get my first diamond badge with MCM (even created a daily crunching plan to make it wink ). As for the previous posts, I find that a 1-3 day buffer has worked great for me.

Re: Much Longer WUs

Thanks for your response! And the suggestion of 2 days. So I went to adjust this, and - that's what the setting was, 2 days. Not sure if this makes a difference on the issue. On downloading WUs for another WCG project, I got 38 of them, with just under the estimated time given for the Incredible Growing MCM WUs blushing , and that's about the time they are running or less.

I'm one of those crunchers who means well but doesn't have a clue as to how all those units do what they do or how the computer does what it does with them - for all I know, I'm helping you decipher secret code from North Korea - so trying to compare MCM's WU performance to that of, say, Uncovering Genome Mysteries, is the same as comparing grapes to rice, or apples to oranges. I noted some other crunchers comparing runtime specs, and felt like I was watching a foreign movie with no English subtitles.

I hope you get fewer and fewer No Reply messages for the WUs, and I'll try to follow this thread to see if the issue works itself out.

It's remarkable [to me] that these projects at WCG can be "worked on" by non-geeks like me, and we can still all make a difference, and maybe actually find cures or next-best-thing solutions, and I don't even have to know what I'm doing other than running BOINC, downloading the work units, and letting them run. Sometimes, to make myself FEEL a bit geeky, I click SHOW GRAPHICS to show my brother or some friends what the computer is working on...

Re: Much Longer WUs

A 1 day buffer works well for me. When WCG announces maintenance downtime, I increase the buffer to 2 days, but that isn't really necessary as I seldom run out of WUs.

Re: Much Longer WUs

The longer/shorter discussion will likely be exceptions as when looking at http://bit.ly/WCGMCM1 with a temporary blow-up superimposed of the hours/result average, you would not want that [The light blue line latter part] to be your EKG. :O)

Re: Much Longer WUs

Seems the latest MCM WUs (13535 - 13561) are long ones... 14-15 hours on my machine (Windows 8, i5).

They do take more time.

Below from my three 2p 6172 crunchers history. (runtime in hours)

Re: Much Longer WUs

wonder how many more wu left

The total number of WU validated is 311,551,631 out of 350,000,000. The latest batch I have received is 15565. There is a known total of 17500 batches with 10,000 Wu in each batch. So there are 1935 batches to be issued yet so there are 19,350,000 work units yet to be issued. Since each unit needs to be run twice that leaves about 38,700,000 work units to be run yet. Using a sample from my results I show about 5% of the units need to have one or more copies issued. Therefore there is the possibility of maybe an additional 950,000 units may need to be issued.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
