Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

I have a 6 ATI gpu mining rig I use occasionally on F@H... almost a million points a day.
If WCG had some opencl projects I would be here instead

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

noderaser, I thought BURP just had CPU work. http://burp.renderfarming.net/apps.php Do they actually have GPU work units now and just not updated their page?

They have been testing some apps for nVidia lately. I don't know how often they update the apps page, they don't even have a link to it on the homepage like most other projects.

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

But please note that, on my i7-3840QM/Radeon 7970 machine, the Folding@Home project consumes all of the GPU computing capacity, PLUS ~50% of the CPU capacity.

This is not so handy for crunchers who want to dedicate their CPU entirely to one project, and their GPU to another.

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

I agree with dkapetansky, crunching on GPU also takes CPU resources.

That's why I stopped other projects on GPU ... waiting for WCG ...

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

You're responding to a post, when same had in another thread/post the solution offered which stopped the cpu use part by f@h: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewpostinthread?post=478004

Of course, this 'all over the place' is when multiple threads is being groaned in by same and the one that gets the resolution does not port the fix to first thread the problem was posted in.

My NVIDIA card GTX 970 is busy with GPUGrid. This is a biomedicine project aimed against cancer, HIV, and neural disorders. It uses the GPU with one CPU core.

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

My AMD GPU, Sapphire R9 270X Toxic, is Folding@home and using less than 2% CPU. The eight cores of AMD FX 8350 CPU are running WCG at 11.7 to 12.5% CPU (about 96% to 98% total CPU).

Re: What are WCG members using their GPUs for?

Some projects use much less of the CPU than others; I've had good luck with Moo! Wrapper using very little CPU. While many people limit their CPU preferences to leave one open core to feed the GPU, I typically don't--and with all 4 cores crunching, Moo! will still maintain 90% utilization of the GPU.

However, if you get a GPU project that needs more overhead to pass data back and forth, running all CPU cores will "starve" the GPU, greatly limiting its performance.
