Re: ! no tasks available !

Oh that's good news. We will have something to do pending WCG tech work outcome. That should quell some of the whinging.

Re: ! no tasks available !

An opt-in with the flex units as is with a significant disclaimer is another solution.

I don't think many people who would want to crunch a WU for 48 hours without checkpoints. I might, but if somethings goes wrong, and I lose 47.5 hours worth of work, I wouldn't be crunching anymore of those WUs.

Re: ! no tasks available !

Agreed, but it does resolve the complaints of how do I get work and allows progress while they work on checkpointing. Hence the significant disclaimer.

Since I have some machines which are 24/7, I would not mind units of that length. If some of them crashed, so be it, that is the price of research.

Count me as one of the few then, as it wouldn't bother me at all to opt-in for those tasks. I have lost more hours than that on other projects that didn't checkpoint.

Also, if there is no way to get the Vina application to checkpoint, WCG could run them in a Linux Virtual Machine. I recently finished a RNA World VM task that ran for just over 4,153 hours and had to be restarted from snapshots about 6 times over the course of its run.

I would also be willing to run the longer WUs with no checkpointing. Typically, I reboot my PC once a month to install Windows Updates. And I usually make sure all the tasks have finished and request no new tasks before I do this.

Re: ! no tasks available !

Same here. My windows pc only restarts after security updates and the two linux pc slightly never.
So I would opt in. No problem with long runtime.

Re: ! no tasks available !

Ditto. The biggest risk to my computer going down is drop-outs in the electricity supply. I am perfectly capable of switching to other projects before any planned maintenance.

Re: ! no tasks available !

Don't forget there are 2 parts to the initial OET work.

1) The rather small set that was processed in 'Rigid' mode, the 560K results we've done
2) The held back 'Flex' mode tasks that run very long, depending on speed of device over 48 hours and -do not- checkpoint. This is magnitudes larger amount of work compared to 1.

The latter is what the technicians are working on [zero info guess], to modify the AD VINA program so that checkpoints are taken in reasonable intervals. This intermediate checkpointing in a single docking run is novel and daunting, to achieve a model restore after resume without upsetting a single bit.

Hi Rob,

The best solution for the VINA's (long or short) is to send all OS's a Scientific Linux VM in which the tasks are processed.
A wrapper can make a snapshot of the VM every 'write to disk interval' and all OS's benefits the faster running of the VINA's on Linux. The tasks within the VM don't have to checkpoint at all.
