CP, have proposed this to include for CEP2, easing development at that, to then only need a Linux version. That was the purpose of the BOINC VBox package, to facilitate. For technically inclined doable, for WCG, a third W will need adding to the set of complaints.
----------------------------------------The technical issue I see for intermediate checkpointing on OET1 is, how do you make the file small enough for the users not to be impaired. If it would work -as is-, you need to consider models of up to 50-100MB being stored and fetched. Saving 1 or saving from 8 concurrent has an impact as we know from CEP2. The opt-in warnings need to be extensive, and the bulk not reading them. Best an acknowledgement box... Yes I understand the terms and conditions ;>) Frankly, I just don't see it happening, the guessing extensive without technical feedback of the issues faced in getting there. edit: Oh and we need staggered resuming and starting for this. Picturing something like a start/resume task setting a flag that blocks any new starts of those apps needing it in a fashion that if a CEP2 were started/resumed, OET1 is too put in hold for n seconds. TRAC ticket outstanding since so long, forgot when, but think it was 2013. No sponsors, no pushers from the project sides looking at the ticket history! Rob
When you refer to the file size, I presume that you are referring to the requirement by CEP2 for 1.26 GB RAM per thread under Windows, which means that only 3 threads can run on a machine with only 4 GB RAM. That was solved initially in my case by restricting CEP2 to 3 threads with APP_CONFIG. That enabled the other 5 threads to be used for other projects. Since then I have boosted my RAM from 4 to 20 GB, so that problem has gone away. If that is the case then would it be possible for someone to amend APP_CONFIG to check the RAM size and automatically restrict threads. The module is currently a voluntary add-in, but could be included in the main program if made automatic. The main problem as I see it is how to prioritise where both OET1 & CEP2 are trying to run. That would probably be best giving priority to the one needing the most RAM. If, say, there was 8GB RAM available and perhaps OET1 needed 2.7 GB, then 2 threads would be available to OET1 leaving 2.6 GB available to CEP2. That would then be restricted to 2 threads as well with 0.08 GB remaining for anything else. I have never really considered myself as a programmer but have dabbled in it from time to time over the last 50 years. Mostly I have amended existing programs. Spreadsheets are my main forte. Mike |

The Scientific Linux VM would seem a good idea. I frequently use the XP VM built into Windows 7 Professional because I have an old Bank Manager program written in MS-DOS.
I would quite like to try SL if anyone has a copy with installation instructions. Mike |

Boinc can be obtained with VBox included as 64 bit at http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.36_windows_x86_64_vbox.exe and 32 bit http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/boinc_7.4.36_windows_intelx86_vbox.exe though see latter as having ltd use.
Some projects for vm are detailed http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/VirtualBox Having my reservation about installing the VM version when u are not crunching in VM. Time enough to change the client install when you are about to. Noticed impact, so why taking that when not vboxing ;? As for manual controls, set the swapfile to zero use in the client. Boinc is supposed to stop tasks that exceed total, so if you try running too many, you'd see 'waiting for memory' being logged. |

I actually received 9 from batch 276 last night, which is one third of the total done previously.

Yes, all were resends and have been returned and validated.
I've also just done some OET Betas, so things are happening. Mike |
