There might be some Ebola work on Folding@Home in the future. They are the experts on GPUs anyway, if that is what you want.
----------------------------------------https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=26704 But you can't just take a project and shove it on to GPUs. The scientific approach used has to line up with the technology. The Folding people have spent years devising statistical methods that can use GPUs and distribute the work around. Most computer problems are run in a sequential fashion, and just being able to divide up the work into small chunks that can be distributed is a major problem. Then finding an approach which works on many small GPU cores at once (parallel processing) is an even bigger hurdle. Not all projects are heading to GPUs in other words just because they are faster in some special cases. By the way, I run Folding all the time on GPUs on several machines while running BOINC projects on the CPU. It might help to install BOINC as a service in some cases, but that is not necessary most of the time. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Dec 7, 2014 4:39:34 PM] |

I can understand the demand/wish for a gpu version. But my understanding is, that the vina application wasn't developed by oet scientists or even fah scientists. The vina application is also used outside of wcg. As long as the developers of the vina application don't provide/develop a gpu version of it, we won't see oet or fah as a gpu project. Actually the Autodock and Autodock Vina apps were developed by the Olson Lab and its members. They run the Fightaids@home project. But please note that, on my i7-3840QM/Radeon 7970 machine, the Folding@Home project consumes all of the GPU computing capacity, PLUS ~50% of the CPU capacity.
This is not so handy for crunchers who want to dedicate their CPU entirely to one project, and their GPU to another. |

Folding@Home isn't an option for me too. In the past they were part of boinc too but they've decided to run on their own with a weird credit system.
----------------------------------------Better run POEM on gpu. ![]() |

This is not so handy for crunchers who want to dedicate their CPU entirely to one project, and their GPU to another. Just delete the CPU slot in Folding (Advanced Control: Configure/Slots), and it will use only the GPU. Each of my HD 7870s takes about 1% CPU power Folding on an i7-3770. I reserve a core for each GPU, by setting BOINC to use only 80% of my processors, which leaves me 6 cores to use for BOINC. I run them all on CEP2, and it works great with no interference between the projects. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Dec 8, 2014 3:28:24 PM] |

I am looking at my Folding@Home Web Control Page, and I see options for Learn, News, Help, and Stop Folding, but I see nothing for the Advanced Control that you mentioned in your post. How could I access this Folding@Home configuration feature? |

I am looking at my Folding@Home Web Control Page, and I see options for Learn, News, Help, and Stop Folding, but I see nothing for the Advanced Control that you mentioned in your post. How could I access this Folding@Home configuration feature? Don't use the Web Control Page. Right-click on the red Folding icon in the system tray, and select "Advanced Control". I think the "Configure" button at the top is then all you will need. Also, the Folding icon is hidden by default as I recall, so click on the Up arrows at the left of the system tray, and select "Customize", and then select "Show icon and notifications" for the FAHClient.exe. They try to hide it for some reason. [Edit 2 times, last edit by Jim1348 at Dec 8, 2014 8:57:18 PM] |

You could run Linux instead of Windows because Vina tasks can be a lot faster on Linux (up 60% if I am not mistakened). If this is true, installing - and learning how to use - a new OS would be worth my time. 60% efficiency increase is a big number. Which Linux version is best for a Linux newbie? Are other projects also faster when they’re run in Linux? [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 9, 2014 1:08:41 AM] |
