WCG for x86 Android devices

I asked some months ago if there were apps compatible with x86 Android devices (for example the ZenFone, ZenPad, PadFone and other Asus devices). I wanted to know if there are news about developing a version compatible with this type of devices.

Yeah, it would also be nice to have to port BOINC on mobile-Win10 OS with ARM processors... wink

No news and as likely as likely can be, not going to happen. Just do the math: There's simply not the user base to justify development, porting, support [on closed source science application code]. WCG is not reaching 0.001% of a couple of billion Windows based machines. Translate that to devices based on .x86 Android and the hobby participant. Were WCG sciences open source, that'd be a different story, but from a 'can we trust the result' perspective, as zero a chance as zero can be. Moi, not going to trust how a protein folds from a program our down-hill neighbor would compile with all his personal views of optimization... mus musculus going in, rattus lutreolus coming out.

Re: WCG for x86 Android devices

If the agent of Berkeley does not support Android x86, then there is no development API either to build science apps for the platform either that can put the appropriate BOINC code around it. But, something is moving: Android 7.4.51 [dev release], now supports "Android: Add support for the various new platforms such as AARCH64, MIPS64, x86_64" (Think there was a 4th processor added but don't see it immediately **).

Become a beta tester, attach to WCG and let your device tell the project server you're good and ready. Those are the stats WCG responds to... it does not create something for an unknown market, the market has to tell the servers it's ready to help.

Edit: ** This was the other check-in last week "Specify alternate platforms for arm64 and x86_64 to their 32-bit counterparts."

Re: WCG for x86 Android devices

BTW, started a thread on these alternate platforms in the Android forum, for if you want to stay abreast. :D
