WUs taking too long

Hi:

Lately I have noticed that the WUs that were estimated to be completed between 5 - 6 hours are now taking upwards of 27 hours to process. How can the time estimated be so far off?

The processor in my laptop is a Intel i7-3740QM running at 2.7 GHZ.

In the past the WUs have been completed within the time estimated.

Are other crunchers noticing the same results?

Clive

This is 101 BOINC science level basics. New work gets the average fpops inserted in the header of previous work returned. As the longer running work gets completed, the new work gets an adjusted fpops estimate. Given that all scienes but UGM have variable runtime,, not known in advance, those runtime estimates in new work are always lacking behind.

I keep pretty close track of the MCM1 project and I have noticed no substantial difference in the run time of the units. I have nothing as powerful as an i7 and no units which have exceeded 10 hours on my slowest machine (q6600) which is much slower than an i7. A suggestion would be to post a copy of the log to see what else might be happening and maybe a screenshot of task manager which would show how much of the cpu each task may be taking.
Cheers

@Sekerob* Twenty seven hours is way out of line for this project and a reasonably fast CPU. Is it my imagination or have your replies become a little more narky recently?

@cehunt It sounds like there's something wrong at your end. Do you ever turn your computer off? If not, then you might try a cold reboot.

Re: WUs taking too long

For anyone having doubts about the time to complete [TTC] on running tasks, strongly recommend to add the <fraction_done_exact/> tag to their app_config.xml or create such with placement in the */boinc/projects/www.worldcommunitygrid.org folder. Basic code outline for MCM1 is
<app_config>
<app>
<name>mcm1</name>
<max_concurrent>0</max_concurrent>
<fraction_done_exact/>
</app>
<project_max_concurrent>0</project_max_concurrent>
</app_config>
This tag works well for all WCG sciences except CEP2. Note that the tag values of >0< works as unrestricted. 1 and above activate the number of concurrent restriction, at science and project overall [WCG] level.

Your version 7 client will -not- adjust the Ready to Start TTCs... they are a direct reflection of the original fpops estimate sent with the task header versus the BOINC benchmarked speed of the host.

Re: WUs taking too long

I've had a number of wu's get to 71.666% complete, on three different machines, and then never go any further. I've aborted all MCM wu's and stop getting them until I read problem is fixed.

There is a problem with these wu's.

Re: WUs taking too long

I have got over 25 cores running MCM1 and have not noticed any problems. There has been little difference in average run time for a couple of weeks. Could you post any logs or any error messages you may have received. What is your hardware and OS ? Are any other projects exhibiting this behavior. How long did the WU's stay at 71.666 % ?Any other other information you could supply would help in identifying the problem.
Cheers

Re: WUs taking too long

All three of my quad processor Dell computers are running Windows 10. I first noticed it when my Stat's graphics were all going down. I don't know if it will make any difference but I've change from BONIC to Word Community Grid manager. On one system I am allowing MCM tasks but haven't got any yet. I had no other WU giving me problems and I aborted the MCM wu at 71.666% after staying at that percent for over two hours.

Re: WUs taking too long

That could have put you from rain into drip. 7.2.47 runs on W10, with buts. Go to the just released 7.6.33 which caters for several W10 quirks, to include crashing and wildly starting new tasks while shutting down. See my yesterday post for links to the new cliebts in a Windows 10 topic.

Re: WUs taking too long

I download wu on my I3-2320 and it was running very slow. It ran normal on my I5-4170.

Now I've updated to BONIC release 7.6.33. I'll let you know how it goes

Thanks for the quick assistance.
