Re: Scheduled Maint. July 18, 14:00 UTC, extended?

Not only is it possible, but also a notice WAS sent to each machine which could be read in your BOINC manager notices World Community Grid: Short Planned Outage for Tuesday, July 18

I guess "AmigaForever" meant the massive failure that followed after the "short planned outage"... (at least I did)

Valid -> Invalid -> Other biggrin
Brilliant!
e.g.
SCC1_ 0000585_ Bct-E_ 17562_ 0-- Microsoft Windows 10 Core x64 Edition, (10.00.14393.00) 708 Other 7/16/17 22:22:29 7/18/17 14:21:56 0.78 18.4 / 0.0

Gut feeling, this state prevents further unnecessary kicking of new copies and allows to repass through the validator. Till then, the invalid will have shot the 'reliable' state, and whence the other convert to valid, that state is restored instantaneously. At any rate, not waiting on the next 200 with wingman, before the 20 valid has been crossed again.

Yes and those who like to tell how / what 'should' be done, might want to visit their communication settings at https://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ms/viewNewsPreference.action and tick some boxes under the 'In-App' Notification column. I've only got Special Announcements ticked.

Negative. I have not seen any such message on any of my hosts that I checked when I noticed the problem and posted a new threat about this. I did see the "official" post about the planned 30min-6h outage well after I posted, not sure if I saw it first on Twitter or FB, after I started to look around if anything is know about the outage...

Re: Scheduled Maint. July 18, 14:00 UTC, extended?

Re-joined less than two months ago from my last Work Unit in 2009. Now had two major glitches in 6 weeks or so. Not good obviously. Hope it's all fixed in the next 12 hours.
What's the fundamental issue? Is it cost and service? Should we be paying a nominal €5 per year to take part?? What van the Community do to help prevent these situations??
Neil.

Still ticked here: Special Announcements, Member News, System Updates + Monthly Digest(*) on all three columns: Email, My News and In-App Notifications.
Note*: * Email frequency applies to all news categories, except Special Announcements which are sent out immediately.

Still haven't seen anything in Email nor any In-App Notifications about the "Short Planned Outage for Tuesday, July 18".

Neil.

Sometimes in IT, despite the best of intentions, bad things happen and they can not always be predicted. Knreed did post a notice of some of the details, but there may be more than what he has stated so far.
I don't think a fee based structure would have had any effect on this type of outage. And unless you have extensive experience in data centers, cloud infrastructure, and cluster programming and maintenance, there is not much for the community to do but be patient and wait. Yes, this is the second major glitch in about 6 weeks, but prior to 6 weeks ago it has been a loooong time since any similar glitch has occurred.
Cheers

Being an active contributor since over 10 years, I can only report that two outages within 6 weeks did never occur in the past. If I remember accurately, the only experienced 2 days outage was scheduled and caused by the move to a new data centre in Canada. Since this, outages did not take more than a couple of hours and they did not impact the overall platform performance.
You should not be too concerned, WCG is really (and highly) reliable.
Happy crunching,
Yves

PS: The best way to "bridge" outages is to maintain a reasonable buffer. On my side, I used to keep 1.5 to 2.0 days large buffers. Since last June, I increased the buffer to 2.5 days.
