Yes, but note that the Gates Foundation has spent over $800m. to date on drug research for the Third World- equal to the annual budget of the World Health Organisation.

Its the making money bit that still puzzles me a tad about WGC. I realise that we are supporting public domain core research as a building block for later development of specific drugs/treatments. What, if any, safeguards are there against commercial exploitation down the road through drug/intellectual property patents effectively piggy-backed on these results?

The immediate results of all of our work on World Community Grid become public domain. Those results will be equally available to all scientists, non-profits, and companies. If they use the results as a starting point for some further breakthrough, that is good. It takes a lot of investment to acutally develop, test, and get approvals for drugs, for example. For other possible projects, such as some sort of climate studies or pandemic studies, the results might, for example, be used by governments to set policies or emergency plans. Our results will be provided to all on an equal playing field. However, we do give the project's research scientists a few months head start to publish their papers.

Hi Viktors...:) Any news on whether the grid might be used for this 'bird flu" thing? I realize a lot of the panic is early and a little misguided, however, we just had a non-invasive case in my province in Canada. It just seemed a little re-active when over 60 thousands domestic chickens and geese were destroyed. Over a 1 million were quarinteened (sp). I will help with whatever the grid throws our way. Just a question on this "avian flu". I do not remember the virus names... sorry.
As far as Bill Gates is concerned, has anybody asked his organization if it could be an optional download? |

We have sent a lot of information about World Community Grid to the worldwide scientific community, including bird-flu researchers in Asia. The process for getting research on to World Community Grid starts here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/projects_showcase/viewSubmitAProposal.do
If you know if anyone doing bird-flu research, please send them the above link. Thanks. |
