A couple months ago I went through their partnership process attempting to solicit a partnership with them and WCG and got a 'not interested'. It was a very personal 'not interested' email though. Some manager from Microsoft actually took the time to compose what looked like a unique and non boilerplate response!
I've gotten several 'not interested' emails from big name companies! One from Sun, Microsoft, Hewlett Packard, Lenovo, that's all I can think of right now. I should know better to stop wasting my time after I get told to buzz off once! ![]() |

Hi dreplogle,
I applaud your efforts. Have you checked if any high-volume websites (craigslist, google, yahoo, etc.) would feature a link to WCG to promote it's use? I assume that would be 'ok' with WCG admin, correct? Thanks, |

Hi beavin
----------------------------------------Google is already in cahoots with folding@home. I have tried to contact Yahoo but no reply from them. I just think it takes some knowhow that I don't have to be able to talk to the right person. My success rate is hovering around less than 1%. I think if someone receives any kind of solicitation from a mere 'user', 'contributor', or 'participant', or someone who doesn't have a title like Vice President of so and so, then the solicitation is given a value index slightly higher than spam and it's quickly discarded. But sometimes you get lucky and they actually take the time to tell you they are not interested! ![]() As far as it being OK with WCG, it's OK to point any contact to the partner link that WCG advertises and also you can't represent yourself as an official spokesperson from WCG. That's pretty interesting. I checked out google's website and it's just as you said... according to the description they have a feature on their toolbar called 'google compute' which sounds like a "wcg-like" program that runs folding@home currently (for "team google"), but they say that in the future there will be other projects which might include ones that will "improve google and it's services" (their own personal grid??). Interesting....

There is another way of spreading the word. As a publisher of a magazine it gets back to old fashioned public relations. With the number of users we now have it is will take a few minutes a day. Remember to leave the Web address for this site as all the information required is here for people to read. Search out any group (and there are 1000's) that deal with AIDS or HIV. Use any search engine. Leave a "short" message under the contacts about the project and tell them that you are a volunteer here. Look for the non-profit ones first as they usually have lots of contacts as well. It is also wonderful to do a Blog search via Yahoo or one of your own choice. Leave a message, if allowed, to anyone talking about not enough being done in this field.
It will make your heart feel good. |

I am replying to my own post because there is one thing we cannot promise anyone wanting to get on the FightAIDS@Home project. I have 5 computers and changed the setting for that project and they all sat idle overnight. When I added "all projects" all 5 computers immediately loaded the "Folding" project. So as a word of caution be sure to tell anyone that the AIDS project is in the back seat right now.

Hello Dcambly,
----------------------------------------Just the opposite. If you look at Statistics - By Projects and then click on each project (you have to select a specific project) you will see that FightAIDS@HOme is getting most of the computer time. But to run it, you need much more memory on a computer. HPF needs 120 MB, FAAH needs 250 MB. Here is the page listing minimum requirements: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/help/viewTopic.do?shortName=minimumreq AutoDock 4.0 takes up 300 MB of Virtual Memory and has a working set of memory pages in real RAM of almost 100 MB, so it is too big to run in the background on a computer with only 128 MB memory. I expect that your computers did not meet the requirements to run FAAH. Added: But you displaced 5 computers that would have been running HPF but now are running FAAH. ![]() mycrofth [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Dec 3, 2005 12:13:32 AM] |

Actually 2 of the computers have 1 gig of Ram, 2 x 180 gigs of hard drive space and run at over 2 ghz, 1 other is slightly less than the first 2 while the other two are lower speeds so they can run the Folding project. I kicked the 6th computer out of the project.
My 2 faster computers sat stalled and that is what I do not understand. As soon as I changed them to include the "folding" project they both started to go. I was not using either of them and just happened to notice that the sceensaver changed once an Fight AIDS file had finished processing. ![]() |

Just another unfathomable puzzle. One of my computers started acting peculiarly this week after I made 3 innocuous changes. Computers are strange. ![]() |
