Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Thank you QuantumEthos for the info, but it seems that I need to get my computer running to see take any action on this. I don't have any USB drives connected as some people suggested. The only USB things are for the keyboard and the wireless mouse. If I could only get the computer booted, then I might be able to stop Norton AV and try it all again. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks

Why do you waste money on Norton AV, when Microsoft has it's own Defender in Win10? Which is working, if you have a legal Win10. wink

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Good point. I may not renew my subscription and just let Win 10 do the work if I can get that computer working again. Thanks for the reminder.

I have used defender ever since Windows 10's initial release. Hitman pro also seems to do a decent job without killing your machine. Better yet, is very screen reader accessible. I drag Nortin and McAn't fee off my system kicking and screaming, most times.

Have you started the bios info or boot manager on boot up and observed your drives set up and make sure the drives are seen and it is booting to the windows boot manager?

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Well, it looks like I am back. I could not get into safe mode, just got a blue screen with some vague (in my opinion) boxes. I followed several paths which didn't get me anywhere. I finally bit the bullet and pressed "RESET PC" and then the option "KEEP PERSONAL FILES". This is supposed to reload windows, remove all other programs but keep my data.

I held my breath, not really or I would be dead. Self booted several times, and miracle of miracles, I eventually saw the screen with the photo on it to log in. Log in went well, installed a new BOINC for WCC which downloaded a whole pile of stuff I don't need and then the first tasks started running.

About 2 weeks of dead time but I was busy running the rest of my life. I finally got around to spending some "quality time" with the old computer while I was working on another project and am happy. I may eventually get around to loading some of the other stuff on it but that is not so important.

Congratulations tmedve good luck That was good news biggrin
What a relief.
Does this mean you have to re-install all you programs/software when you 'RESET PC'?

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Yes. Fortunately, I don't do too much with it so I need BOINC(done), Chrome, TeamViewer, to start with. Printer drivers, MS office, my accounting program if the mood strikes me. I'm very glad that I mostly use my laptop now and the desk top is nearly 100% WCG.

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

OK. I would dare to do that if necessary then.
My concern is - maybe incorrectly - that a couple of ancient programs I have might not be accepted.
You wouldn't happen to have something as old as hush: Word97 to install, would you?

Re: Microsoft update -> dead in the water

Not those, but Quicken financial but that worked already on this system. If I need to, I will try it.

A little off topic, but I still use WordPerfect 5.1 for DOS. I upgraded many years ago from WordPerfect 4. It is so much simpler to use for me than Word, mostly because I know the keystrokes and do not have to monkey around with the mouse. Crunch on.
Cheers
