Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

I have 2 sitting at the bottom of my WU's showing 58 min to complete. If these have a time limit to report completed, there is no way boinc will start these in time and I will have wasted computer time. Debating on aborting them.

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

Just happened to see the first uploading, a mere 100MB in result files at a sluggish 70Kbps. This is going towards "too many files uploading, not sending new work" whilst others are finishing.

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

I found that I had snagged one beta WU (two other machines unlucky!) - WU completed in about 16hrs with no issues other than check points seem to be rather infrequent.....
Are there going to be more beta WU's coming in the short term??

@Bearcat
Do force them manually into computation: put all inactive WUs on hold, then put two active WUs on hold. Now the two beta units start. Then you can free all WUs on hold to be available again.

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

For entertainment

On Tablet ZIKA_000435270_x5k5m_DENV2_NS5pol_s1_0150_0 48.592 1.305 98.39%
On Desktop BETA_ARP1_0000383_000_0 31.707 1.045 83.62%

Credit per hour on the 10x slower tablet 1.3 per hours, the desktop 1.0.

Hey DJ, it was an honor to participate in this ARP1 beta, which sunk performance on my other activities at that running concurrently with MIP1.

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

Readers may be interested in some execution speed comparisons for these tasks.

My crunching "farm" has 7 Intel 3770K CPUs running at 3.6 - 4.4GHz, and 1 8700K at 4.3GHz.
All run Windows 7 x64, and all of the 3770Ks run Debian Linux x64 in virtual machines.
There seems to be negligible speed loss overhead with running in the VMs, and they normally run only VINA projects, ie Zika at present.
The Windows threads run mostly FAHB.

2 of the machines received some of these beta WUs for both OSes, so we can roughly compare speeds for Linux vs Windows:
Device Deimos: 3770K @ 3.6GHz (Intel toy cooler), 4 threads Win, 4 threads Lin, 3 beta_arp1 WUs.
Beta_arp1 times: Win 23.4h, Lin 19.7h. Lin is 19% faster.

Device Tethys: 3770K @ 4.4GHz (TRUE Rev 0 cooler), 6 threads Win, 2 Threads Lin, 3 beta_arp1 WUs.
Beta_arp1 times: Win 18.65h, Lin 16.9h. Lin is 10% faster.

Device Oberon: 8700K @ 4.3GHz, 12 threads Win, 2 beta_arp1 WUs.
Beta_arp1 time: Win 14.3h average
Best comparison device - Iapetus: 3770K @ 4.25GHz (TRUE Rev 0 cooler),
6 threads Win, 2 Threads Lin, 2 beta_arp1 WUs (Windows).
Beta_arp1 time: Win 19.5h average, scaling to 4.3GHz gives 19.3h.
8700K was 35% faster than 3770K clock-for-clock.

The beta WUs did not always run simultaneously under Windows and Linux, but there was some overlap.
While the Windows beta WUs were running, I disabled downloading of new FAHB WUs, to prevent these pre-empting the betas, and enabled new Zika and MIP work. Thus the mix of non-beta WUs varied, and I think this would have affected the accuracy of my comparisons, so please take them as approximations.

Thanks for your interest - RJB

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

One of mine is running. It was originally predicted to take 2 hours, 59 minutes. It is just about to hit three hours. HOWEVER, the progress bar says I am about 12.5% complete and I have 20 minutes to complete it. Quite a contradiction. But now the time to complete is slowly INCREASING, and is at 20 minutes 50 seconds to complete. As far as I know, it is computing OK, but the progress bar and time to complete are faulty in more than one way.

Re: New Beta Test – May 29, 2019 [Issues Thread]

Thanks, useful to know. I should be able to compare an i7-8700 to a Ryzen 2700 (both on Ubuntu) in the next few days. At least you have pretty much answered the question for Windows v. Linux.

Must be something about a safety-net function... if your device takes too long, the claim will be slashed to what the fpops header said comes with 1 hour 29 minutes. Yes, that would be about right were my computer in the q-bit class. ;o)

(Frankly its long overdue this [French expletive] rule is ripped out of the system, or set to something sane... if all VOLUNTEER computers do, than the header is wrong and not the claimant)
