For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

Hello Everyone,

Very, very soon we'll be officially launching our newest project, and you can start seeing work units today. It's been a long wait and has taken a lot of behind-the-scenes work to get this one ready, so we're even more excited than usual. Before the official launch, we wanted to give you all a heads-up about the technical background and requirements for the project.

Background

The Africa Rainfall Project utilizes the Weather Research & Forecasting (WRF) model for the research application. WRF is a very large, mostly Fortran application and the simulations being run require more resources than are typically used for a World Community Grid project. For this reason, volunteers will not be automatically opted into this project.

Important Points (Please Read):

 • This project is opt-in only. Any volunteers who wish to contribute computing time to this project must log into their account and select the project from the website to receive work. Please review the system requirements page for this project.
 • The default setting is one task per machine at a time. In addition, due to the larger than normal system requirements, the project will default to sending one task per machine. If any volunteers wish to increase this value, please see the “How do I limit the number of tasks assigned ... for a specific project?” FAQ.
 • Work unit size and numbers: Due to the large file sizes of the input and output for this project, the number of tasks sent out per day will be much less than typical projects. For launch, we are starting slow, and while the total number of tasks sent out per day may increase some as we get further in to the project, at this point we anticipate those increases to be minimal.

More Info on WRF, Work Units, and Checkpoints

For those not familiar with the WRF application, it is used to simulate weather conditions over a region over a defined time period. The work for this project will be broken into small geographical regions, and in the end each region will be simulated for one calendar year.

Each individual work unit represents 48 hours calendar time for this simulation. Once a result has been validated for the 48 hours, the output will be used to build the input for the next 48 hours of runtime. The average CPU runtime for an individual workunit in beta testing was about 24 hours. This runtime is also much longer than a typical project.

Due to limitations in the application, we are only able to take 8 checkpoints during each workunit. Depending on the speed of the host, this could result in long times between checkpoints. For this reason, volunteers who choose to run this project may want to consider using the 'Leave applications in memory while suspended' option in their device profile

Please ask any questions in this thread, and as always be sure to read previous questions and answers before posting. Thanks to everyone for your support.

Thanks,
armstrdj

Re: For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

Excited for this launch! Thanks for all the tremendous behind-the-scenes hard work.

Two questions/comments:

1) I'm seeing "Africa Rainfall Project" in most places but "African Rainfall Prediction" in the Application name.

2) Most of my ARP1 work units have been "tainted" by an entire fleet of I presume enterprise machines that are Erroring out with:
<core_client_version>7.2.47</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
couldn't start app: CreateProcess() failed - A required privilege is not held by the client.
(0x522)
</message>

]]>

I've seen these for years, but since this project is opt-in, that means there's a fleet of corporate machines still running client 7.2.47 that are potentially "trashing" work units, especially since there's a limit of 5 I believe. I wish the BOINC Server back-end had a way to more aggressively kick these problem devices off the network until they are addressed or upgraded. I might try to get in touch with the BOINC Server developers as a feature request.

Re: For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

hchc,

We had a typo in the database. It should be corrected now, I restarted the feeder and that should correct it on new workunits going out. Project is named Africa Rainfall Project.

Also, we do get machines that are set to run results from other projects but those hosts have already been limited to 1 result per day... They start with say 5 results per day, but once they return errors, it drops down to 1.

Thanks,

Long awaited. Count me in. Got a few and will see what happens. Hope this project plays well in the sandbox with others. coffee

EDIT: Well I'll be <expletive deleted wink >, it even runs well concurent with a VBox project! I'll give you a tentative tip of the hat for that. peace

My 10 cores are aiming at it with "unlimited" to get started and we'll see where it takes us. let's go!

"Please ask any questions in this thread"

How will this program ever know how simulations develop in adjacent regions? I'd anticipate divergence, unless you will actually use adjacent region output to keep things aligned.

Re: For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

Each WU equals a simulated 48 hours, then the next WU is created. How long of a simulated period of time will each thread go for? 1 year? More?

Re: For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

FYI I got the error message
30/10/2019 18:22:36 | World Community Grid | No tasks are available for Africa Rainfall Project

Edit 1: Windows machine
Edit 2: 16 minutes later I got my first WU.

Re: For Current Volunteers: Advance Information on Our Newest Project

Saw the deadline is 7 days. 24 hours computing for 48 hour simulation. That'd be at least 1 year to complete a 2 year sequence in the most optimal situation. With the deadline though it will be longer.

Edit: Some kind of progress matrix would be nice.
