Re: Work Available

The next batch should be released soon.

Very well. I would like to devote a machine to ARP, but that is not practical with their random releases. I will add OPN and hope they do not slow down the ARP. Sometimes the work units do not get along with ARP, which seem a bit finicky.

But my larger question is do they really need all the crunchers they have? If not, I can put the machine elsewhere. Without statistics, it is hard to judge.

Jim

Firstly, because of the nature of arp, you should not devote a whole machine to arp. Much better to devote half of 2 machines because of what Aurum and I have said above.

As to your second question, as you will see in my post above, I am forecasting that arp will not finish until March 2023, so they need crunchers. The statistics are readily available in this thread, but I will restate them. We are now on the 41st iteration and we are expecting 183 iterations altogether. Each iteration covers a 2 day period and they were stated as covering a whole year. As the year in question is not a leap year, we have assumed that they will do 183 iterations rather than fall a day short with 182 iterations

My forecast of March 2023 is based on the average time interval between the start of each iteration, but limiting the calculation to the last 10 intervals so as to take account of current crunching.

All the current WCG projects are worthy of our help, so it is a good thing to spread across several projects especially as arp and mip need to be spread rather than concentrated on specific machines.

Spreading them about also helps with temporary shortages, although I very rarely find delays of more than a couple of hours except during maintenance periods. By keeping 1 or 2 spare units I always have enough.

Aurum420

The problem with arp is when 2 units checkpoint at the same time. The more you have on a machine, the more likely 2 will checkpoint at the same time. i9s are modern machines with fast modern components so checkpointing takes less time so there is a lower risk of them clashing. But they still can.

Re: Work Available

This is a little off topic:
I have prostate cancer, thankfully reduced to a very low PSA now.

I hope you do well with that. Been there, diagnosed in my late 50's. After hearing about the alternatives for treatment, I just told them to take it out. Best decision I could have made. I am sure for others it is different based on their circumstances.
OK, back to African Rainfall Project
Cheers

I am quite familiar with the tradeoffs between projects and the number of ARP that I can run. Actually, I could run all 8 cores of an i7-9700 (full cores) without problem, if there was a continuous supply. Otherwise, I need a backup. That introduces some other complexities, not the least of which is the limited number of profiles ("locations") that WCG/BOINC provide. I could use more.

As to your second question, as you will see in my post above, I am forecasting that arp will not finish until March 2023, so they need crunchers.
You could forceast that they will have additional projects for the next 100 years and need lots of help too. That does not quite address the point. If they have gaps, then they don't appear to need all the help they have. (If they didn't have enough crunchers, they would not have the gaps). At any rate, I would like the information.

There is an almost continuous supply. I keep 3 running continuously with a cache of only 4. If there is planned maintenance, I double my cache.

It is possible, just a little tricky. But I can manage three or so without problems. Each project has its own peculiarities. Thanks.

Re: Work Available

041s started flowing today so I now expect completion in May 2023.
