WCG Client Cannot Connect to Internet [fixed]

The WCG software on my PC is unable to connect to the Internet for about a week, and it's driving me nuts, because it should work. Since I had difficulty authenticating Microsoft Office programs, I wonder if there's something wrong with the network driver. Here are some things I tried in an attempt to resolve this:

I chose retry transfers from the Tools menu.
I uninstalled the software and reinstalled it.
I set Network activity to suspend and then changed it back to always a few seconds later.
I even chose shut down connected client from the File menu, and I can't get it back, because it can't connect to the Internet.
I went into my firewall to make sure the BOIC client and WCG program were allowed to send and receive. I even turned it off and closed it.
Checked to see if the modem is causing problems, but its security is off.

One thing I tried through the modem was to ping WCG's homepage in a troubleshooting tool, and it couldn't connect; however, it connected successfully to other websites.

What other information do you need to help?

What operating system?
Did you post to the forum using the same PC?
What has changed?

Posting the first 50-100 lines of BOINC log and the output of any other diagnostics, such as ping, would help.

Oh, duh, I take operating system for granted nowadays. It's Windows 10. I posted this using the PC that can't connect.

I'm lost regarding what changed. Assuming you are talking about where I used the word "changed", I changed Network Activity to suspend then back to always a few seconds later.

When I typed this reply, I got the project back up, but it can't download any tasks. I repeated the ping test mentioned above, but it worked, so I wonder if I mistyped the WCG URL.

Okay, I have no other connection problems that I know of. There's no problem with authenticating Microsoft Office reported previously. Under options in BOINC, there's no settings for Connections, HTTP Proxy Server, and SOCKS Proxy Server.

Weird, the initial standard imagery files download fine, but when the data starts downloading things go bonkers

I'd change that to allow computing while using and increase the percent to at least 50%. You just would not know BOINC is running while using.
Not sure but if computing is suspended, network is being suspended too, but

The modem is always on, because it also houses the home phone, and we use the Wi-fi a lot.

Thanks for the suggestions, but it still cannot connect to download more projects, and I don't see any other program having difficulty connecting. I may have to reinstall Windows, but that is time consuming that I hope I don't have to do, and there's a chance this problem may still exist. I wonder if any of the latest updates with Windows is causing the problem.

Looking at the log file, I see the following:

Edit: I forgot that there's a certificate authority authentication problem with JetBrains Toolbox and their software, and I'm getting the same issue with World Community Grid. There's a possible manual override, but that could cause security problems. JetBrains has no support for it--at least, I couldn't find any.

I found an FAQ regarding here about not connecting to the server, which included some advanced tasks, specifically with a cc_config.xml file. This adds more problems:

My computer doesn't have that file in the Program Files\BOINC directory.
Creating said file in that directory and setting it according to the FAQ didn't work.

I changed the log file settings, and I got the following lines in the log file:

Ah, yes that was a recent problem. You may have to upgrade your client to 7.16.7. Certainly look for posts by knreed on this.

I upgraded BOINC to 7.16.7. No effect.

I went to the link you gave me, and I see that WCG added SSL, which changed the URL, and it caused the software to think it's different. I don't have an all_projects_list.xml file, so I don't know what else I need to do.

I think the resolution might be to just detach from WCG and than re-add WCG from the pick list. It should fill in the correct url automatically.

all_projects_list.xml is in the often hidden [default] C:\ProgramData\BOINC folder.
If your client is not connected to BOINCStats Account Manager (BAM), the angle is not relevant to you.

Had the weird situation since yesterday afternoon (only saw it this morning because the crunch queue was empty) that BOINC could not upload results anymore, the BOINCTasks manager lost connection with the client and could not reestablish and Windows 10 Security was acting up saying there was a low level communication breach of some sort, happened to install 19042.343 build yesterday before the issues started. All got computed what was in buffer by this morning and nothing was downloaded because there were too many results to upload. A good time to upgrade to 7.16.7 from 7.14.3, but that did not change anything... connecting to localhost ad infinitum. Eventually decided to detach client from BIOINCTasks and readd.... no change. Core client stopped, started, uploading resuming, an ARP1 was top of list, and upload stopped soon as transmission buffer maxed at about 8% progress. Revisit Windows Security and granted the permission that was never asked for before. No change. Eventually booted again and that did the trick. Client started, added computer back to BOINCTasks and uploading resumed, tab views filled.

Now I have a request for the developers (techs/knreed is one of them).

ARP1 takes near 20 minutes to upload from here. In that 20 minutes it's holding up many many small files to upload and report and until such time, no new work is fetched until the 'to report' drops below the core count'... there were 37 results to upload and there's 8 cores in the machine. Could the uploading/transfer be sort prioritized by attached project to do smallest first and biggest near the end? Once the ARP1 reported complete, after said 20 minutes, it took only few minutes to get the others uploaded, after which work fetch resumed... 20 minutes for unneeded idling after fixing the communication issue.

NB: Default up/download of 8 files concurrent does not work from here as it leads to total collapse of networking. The limit has to be 1 or 2 max in the cc_config.xml line <max_file_xfers_per_project>n</max_file_xfers_per_project>

Thank you, all, for the help, but I already removed the project from BOINC and had difficulty adding it back. I did it again anyway, and I can't get it back.

I've tried making sure the firewall didn't block the program. I uninstalled and reinstalled it more than once, and I even upgraded BOINC itself without success. Since I don't know what else to do, I'm to the point of uninstalling the program. I don't like having my computer do nothing when I'm not using it, and this was a wonderful way to fill that gap. I'll reinstall the program when there's a software update.
