There seems to be a consistent pattern of them being invalid 4x and then the server aborts the 5th try or its late or something.

Well, from what I can see, they've stopped sending out work totally for OPNG. I have tried for a while to see if they possibly have solved the "invalid" issue, and there's nothing at all coming my way, not even any _2,_3,_4........
