i was just wondering if the GPU nvidia tesla k80 will work for open pandemics ?
----------------------------------------I was looking into buying this card but was unsure if it was supported and if others had any experience with this card or could recommend anything better or different that is around the same price. I am looking to spend around $200 for a card to add to my crunching just wanted to get some more input from others here. Thanks in advance for your response. If it supports OpenCl 1.2 it should work but I personally have no experience with Tesla cards.

it'll work, it does indeed support OpenCL 1.2.
----------------------------------------but it's quite an old card, and will use a lot of power. i'd recommend looking into newer generations within your budget. Pascal or newer. ![]() EPYC 7V12 / [5] RTX A4000 EPYC 7B12 / [5] RTX 3080Ti + [2] RTX 2080Ti EPYC 7B12 / [6] RTX 3070Ti + [2] RTX 3060 [2] EPYC 7642 / [2] RTX 2080Ti |

The miners have driven the prices of newer Nvidia cards up beyond stupid. I was looking for a second 1060 to add to my lone remaining Linux machine but for $600+ I'll pass.

I'm aware of the situation.
----------------------------------------even at elevated prices. a 1060 6gb should only be about $300. not that I'd pay that much, but that's around what they're going for on used parts markets like reddit r/hardwareswap. but better to not buy anything than over pay for a 7 year old card like the Tesla K80. ![]() EPYC 7V12 / [5] RTX A4000 EPYC 7B12 / [5] RTX 3080Ti + [2] RTX 2080Ti EPYC 7B12 / [6] RTX 3070Ti + [2] RTX 3060 [2] EPYC 7642 / [2] RTX 2080Ti |

Newegg is listing 1060s for over $900. Oddly, this is slightly *more* than the 2060s they have, many of which are in the $800s range. Even used 1060s are over $400 easily. It's no-man's land out there... and it's not just the miners, supply is just not there.
As far as Tesla cards go, many are purposed for FP64 calculations and are priced accordingly. OPN is FP32 and won't really benefit. (Tesla cards are also often marked up just because they can, due to the business target market.) I would only get a Tesla for this project if you can get a K80/P100 for a steal, or a decent deal on a T4 - which is also a low-power card. Otherwise, desktop gaming cards are perfectly fine - if you can find one for a decent price. |

Always pay attention to the actual seller. You'll see the same stuff on Amazon or any site that allows 3rd party sellers to use their platform. 3rd party sellers can name their price, but that doesn't mean they are actually selling anything at that price. No one in their right mind will buy a 1060 for $900. They are just hoping to take advantage of someone who doesn't know any better. Newegg doesn't and won't/can't list nearly any 10-series card because they are 2 generations old and out of production and they just don't have any more new stock. Otherwise, desktop gaming cards are perfectly fine - if you can find one for a decent price. you used to be able to get these Kepler series Teslas for super cheap because they are so old and the current gen cards are just way more efficient and powerful. so the demand was fairly low when you could buy say a 1070 and outperform the tesla K* with less cost and less power used because most projects didnt care about FP64 performance (only exception is Milkyway). you could never really get the T4 for less than $2000 though. even used ones are still ~1800 on ebay, not exactly an option for someone looking for a $300 card. it's a great card though. small form factor, single slot, roughly RTX 2060/2060S/2070 performance with only 75W and no external power required. ![]() EPYC 7V12 / [5] RTX A4000 EPYC 7B12 / [5] RTX 3080Ti + [2] RTX 2080Ti EPYC 7B12 / [6] RTX 3070Ti + [2] RTX 3060 [2] EPYC 7642 / [2] RTX 2080Ti |

Newegg doesn't and won't/can't list nearly any 10-series card because they are 2 generations old and out of production and they just don't have any more new stock. Oh, well of course. Newegg proper hasn't had them for years. It is useful, though, as a metric to see what it takes to keep a listing in stock - after all, anything listed at a price people are willing to pay vanishes almost instantly. And they claim to be "new" listings at $900... used, it falls to $400 or so. I wonder how many bite at that.... Shame to hear about the T4. I actually just did a web search and most listings are still above $2000, with Dell and Lenovo's own websites listing them at $4000 - not third party! Ugh. For a certain price premium, it would still come out ahead given the reduced operating cost of a 75W card, but, not like this. So, original poster... you're unlikely to find much of anything great for $200-300 in this market. I see some listings for the 1050Ti for that much, but it's about half as fast at FP32 as the 1060. There's also the 960, at about the same price/performance as the 1050Ti. |

I think another factor is pushing card prices up. Modern cars. There's a huge demand for memory and processors to support huge touchscreen consoles, whizzy graphics, games, etc. Not to mention all the AI systems. Many big brand car makers have been struggling to get all kinds of chips, to the point that some have shut/slowed down production lines due to chip supply problems.
It's a seller's market and I think if you own a FAB plant at present you can pretty much do the same as the card suppliers on ebay, newegg etc. i.e. Set an outrageous price for manufacturing the chips you need and then wait for the desperate to come with their wallets open. |
