If the network outage was a problem with DNS, is it possible that the working PC had a hosts file containing an entry for world community grid which did the translation from URL to an IP address? The working machine does not have any entries in the hosts file for world community grid. [Edit 2 times, last edit by AgrFan at Jan 11, 2023 1:27:17 PM] |

Maybe it was DNS caching with different times to next expiry. Some PCs still had IP addr cached, others had timed out and had to ask. Paul.

I'm have three machines running native BOINC clients and one machine running the IBM branded WCG client. I don't know how and when you determined that the one specific BOINC client was able to communicate, but I had checked about a dozen machines yesterday when I became aware of the problem, with a mix of WCG branded clients as well as BOINC branded one, and NONE of them could upload, report and download. The one machine running the IBM branded WCG client had no issues downloading, uploading and reporting work during the outage last night. The three machines running native BOINC clients were not able to download, upload or report work during the outage last night. It would be interesting to know why the IBM branded WCG client was not impacted by the outage. IBM branded WCG client (7.14.3) - OK Krembil downloaded client (7.16.11) - NOT OK Ubuntu Linux client (7.16.6) - NOT OK And of top of that neither web site nor forum where accessible, which is completely independent from the use of any version of the BOINC client. I was also not able to "ping" or "trace" to worldcommunitygrid.org, with error messages indicating that the authoritative DNS servers were not accessible. That all indicates a pretty hard shutdown, where I don't see how a single, specific application would be able to "sneak in through the backdoor"... ![]() Ralf I agree with Ralf. All of my machines, whether IBM branded BOINC or other BOINC, Linux or Windows, could not connect during the outage. All recovered fine with no intervention. Cheers
Sgt. Joe

Where can we download the IBM branded client? I did not know that existed. There was never an "IBM" branded BOINC client ever since I joint WCG 12 years ago. What he was likely referring to is the one that could be downloaded from WCG's website (rather than from BOINC's Berkley website, "yellow dot"), with that red&blue logo, which was then replaced with those current "rings" just before the announcement of Krembil taking over. There used to be a different WCG BOINC client logo before that "red&blue" one, but honestly, I don't even recall right now what that was... Ralf ![]() |

If the network outage was a problem with DNS, is it possible that the working PC had a hosts file containing an entry for world community grid which did the translation from URL to an IP address? Why and HOW would a local host file have IP info of an external host in it? Again, for all of the checks that I tried while the system was done (and being aware that there had been a ransom ware attack a couple of years back, wasn't aware of that on SickKids hospital last month though), it seemed like a network infrastructure failure, possibly edge router, that would not allow any communication from the outside in, as it would be the case if a network is being isolated in case of a cyber attack, which by now has been repeatedly refuted as the source for Monday's outage. Have not seen in any CA general news nor in some IT/networking related sources any info what the actual problem would have been, but I kind of doubt that there was a possibility to get in or out of that network between the reported outage start at 11:45am (Eastern Time) on Monday and 2:30am on Tuesday morning... I don't know what AgrFan's location is and possibly different time of the day for him, but I had just downloaded the results for my stats program around 8:30am (Pacific Time), which was about 15min before the outage and noticed that systems didn't upload and report less than an hour later, by which time all attempts to access website and forum timed out, and access was possible again just before I went to bed around midnight... Maybe it was DNS caching with different times to next expiry. Some PCs still had IP addr cached, others had timed out and had to ask. I was thinking the same thing while watching the machine during the outage. This is the most likely answer. I didn't want to reboot the machine to test my theory since it was working normally. What he was likely referring to is the one that could be downloaded from WCG's website (rather than from BOINC's Berkley website, "yellow dot"), with that red&blue logo, which was then replaced with those current "rings" just before the announcement of Krembil taking over. Yes, I'm referring to the client that could be downloaded from the WCG website before Krembil took over. Blue/red logo - v7.14.3. I'm still running that client version on one Windows 10 machine. I don't know what AgrFan's location is and possibly different time of the day for him I'm located in Glen Mills, Pennsylvania (Eastern Time). Not too far from Philadelphia and Wilmington, Delaware.
