Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Why can't UNH/Krembil spare some hardware and loan 1 or 2 server tech folks for a few days to get it running with WCG? Somebody's gonna catch on it's a month (at the rate it's going) that nothings been accomplished and its gonna be egg on their face.

It's good practice and common knowledge among people who work in the IT field : spares.

Concerning the hysterical behaviour following the outage. I'd say people had good stats, badges, streaks, etc. and loses every possibilities to improve that. As I've always thought and said : we are here to crunch numbers, we enjoy it. Glad it helps but ... yeah, badges and stuff.

The fact that WCG comes and goes doesn't help. There has been more down than up and people supporting the project are fed up.

And it’s common knowledge in academia, money (or lack of it). The university cannot afford to keep that level of spare parts.

As to the stats, badges and streaks - we’ve been told, repeatedly, that these will be preserved during this period of disruption (ok, anarchy 🙂) and restored when the project is declared live again.

You hope for work, and you rely upon that hope. Good for you.

and when, pretty inevitably, one catches a crab for a few days or weeks,

Nice rowing reference. Could have happened once or twice in my career. Thanks for putting it in.

Cheers

That's a relief for the majority as far as the badges etc. are concerned.

As for the academia field... I know it well. Lots of people are in need for money and it reaches the point where you have to ask an authorisation for the university to by new pencils (not a joke).

So... in terme of pencil... must be a lot of if you put it in the balance with an HDD.

Despite what I've said since the beginning. I truly desire WCG to go on smoothly enough with enought the WUs given to crunch. It's a project I still like.

There are tightwad organizations and then there are places where penny wise and pound foolish are hallowed mottoes. I once worked for an organization where the forms for requesting just about anything were in a locked cabinet which to my untrained eye appeared not to have been opened in recent history. I was advised, as the new guy, just to not even broach the subject. My tenure there lasted only long enough to find something different, it did not even have to be better.

Cheers

I think this thread's dead (in terms of news, that is!) See the 20th March thread for (slightly) more up-to-date information.
