Re: Hardware Recovery Update

We all want this mess fixed. It won't be without money, which is clearly in short supply. Rather than whinging, go here:
https://support.uhnfoundation.ca/site/Donatio...p;set.SingleDesignee=2001

Hope my little bit adds to a much larger total, to pay admins who know what they are doing, and buy the tools they need to do it. Looking forward to uploading the WU's I've got clogging up my disk and getting my 20-thread donk crunching again.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

if no workunits are available, no kW of electricity are being consumed, of course

Of course not, since the machines are waiting since over two weeks for reporting and I will only shutdown them after reporting is completed.

I have nothing against donation.
Nevertheless I cannot advocate for donation or any other kind of sponsoring without a clear and reasonable business vision.
Starting to spend money without knowing what are the challenges WCG as well as Krembil have to face to is finally wasted time and money.
After one year, we see that naivety and endless optimism are not sufficient for reliably operating the WCG platform.
How do you plan to motivate possible sponsors if you don't know exactly what you need in terms of:
  • Hardware
  • Software
  • Services
  • Staff
  • Support

You need a quantified and realistic plan.
What we experience since March 2022 is caused because such plan is missing. Imho it is absolutely not understandable that such a migration and operational transfer project has been initiated without a robust plan quantifying platform, operational, as well as repair and maintenance costs.

My comment may be disturbing and annoying however without a clear vision and a realistic plan any donation will be wasted money.
At the same time, research teams need to be comforted about WCG future otherwise they will not submit any new research projects for the future making finally WCG useless.

I am still willing to help but not at any costs and not for hopeless development.
Cheers,
Yves

This link doesn't work for me. Is it intended to be a specific one to support WCG?

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Hi!
First Thank You Dr. Jurisica for all updates/news 😃

Thank You, Tomahawk4196 for the link for the donation page, a humble
donation given from mee also😌

And an addition to DADX:

Dr. J. Maybe posting the number of contributors (not $) will help inspire others to donate.. Nothing spurs participation like knowing that others are participating..

We all do like some "new" badges so why not do as on PrimeG, make something like the golden crown beside the donors name, a silver Can$$ or golden Can$$ ?

With regards,
Hans Sveen

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Some credit where it is due (from someone who has previously whinged about lack of communication!)
I have found it extremely helpful to read the multiple posts by Dr J responding to points raised in this thread. These have made it much clearer to me that his lab has been struggling to save a valuable research support tool (for the lab and others). However, the lab is small group lacking funding and needing resources from the larger organisations within which they operate and this is all a cash-strapped environment, it seems. (It is now apparent that the size of the logos on the website don't reflect the resources available!)
At the end of the day Dr J and his team are trying to do cancer research. All this must be a huge distraction from the core work of the lab in the short term. I hope that the end result is a stable and effective WCG that will repay his efforts by accelerating the research.
That Dr J took time out from all the other work that must be piling up on his desk is much appreciated!
Thanks
Phillip

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

Thank you ThreadRipper - all good suggestions, and we will try to look into the financially favorable one. In terms of design - a few years back - when we were doing fundraising cycling rides (and had IBM-OCI team) - we had our own design jersey and shorts - call it crazy colors (like the Mapei team in 80s) - but - we were wearing cancer data. The color represented up and down regulated genes from our analysis (using Self Organizing Maps) - and we had a protein interaction network, protein crystal (time when we were running the HCC project), etc - it was fun when other riders were interested in it - and we spent long time discussing science, just because it looked very differnet.

Maybe as a first step we should run a poll what kind of products may be potentially of interest - and start with the more frequent requests. But maybe - one of the volunteers, ambassadors may be able to help us in this quest too ?

thank you
igor

Thank you Dr Jurisica, and an interesting story! I think it should be possible to do this on a larger scale now via 3rd party service like RedBubble for instance.

A poll - that would be a great idea I think! In the social network channels and/or the website/forum/email link.

I made a quick example via poll-maker.com, but I didn't have a high-res image.
But if you make an account there and create a poll you can reuse copy/paste any parts of the text etc that you like to quickly set up a poll of your own that you can see the results of on your dashboard.

Here's the sample:

Thank you!

Of course you have, just like everybody else. It's the website that is up and running. BOINC is still dead as a doornail.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

duanebong said " It's not a monetary issue from where I stand"

Sir:

Thank you for your long-term contribution of computer time ... if you are anything like me, such a contribution gives you a feeling of helping to improve the world, in some small way, which is a bright spot of good in your life. Personally, i cherish that feeling because it is real, and I am proud of my contribution.

You say it is not a monetary issue for you, which is good, but it has become a monetary issue for Dr. J. and his team. So many things have changed in the world over the past few years, it would seem to be unreasonable to expect that everything would stay the same at WCG.

I suspect that your intent, your spirit of volunteering to help improve the world, has NOT changed: You still want to help with the research projects at WCG, as do most of us.

Now, it is only the form of contribution needed that has changed, and that only a little bit: In addition to your compute time, please donate $5 per month, so that your compute time can be efficiently managed.

As the saying goes "Many hands make light work" - if we can get to 1,000 donors volunteering $5 per month, many problems get fixed permanently.

PLEASE consider giving this small donation every month .... it would be a shame if we have all come this far, only to have to give up the spirit of volunteering, for lack of something so basic as cash.

Thank you for anything you can do.

Re: Hardware Recovery Update

One think I would also recommend is to look to see if your company has any sort of matching donations for charitable causes. You can make your dollar go twice as far that way.
