Re: OPN1 supply update

Let me summarize the current situation:
  • OPN1 is not available anymore for non-GPU configuration
  • WCG struggles with reliably distributing WUs for all projects (MCM1 as well as SCC1; by the way no other project is available).
  • Reliable machines run dry and stay in stand-by instead of crunching.
  • Contributors have to be happy with the situation: consuming electricity for nothing.

Definitively I have the strong feeling that Krembil is just trying to kill WCG without telling the true in an open manner.
It is unfair for the scientists relying on the WCG support.
It is unfair for the contributors willing to support life science or climate projects.
I can understand that Krembil may have fully underestimate what operating WCG does effectively mean. However a clear statement would be highly appreciated instead of disappointing the faithful contributors.
Cheers,
Yves

Re: OPN1 supply update

I’m sorry Yves but I totally disagree.

You say that it is unfair on the scientists who rely on WCG for support but the lack of OPN1 tasks is down to the scientists taking time to evaluate their results.

You say that this is unfair on contributors who support life science or climate projects but any such contributor will support multiple projects and be used to several projects being out of work at any one time - currently TN-Gris and CPDN are both down having new hardware fitted during periods when they are not generating any work units, Rosetta has not had work for months but you do not accuse them of secretly trying to kill their systems.

Droughts happen - over the past couple of months WCG and SiDock have been the most reliable projects I am connected to.

But OPN[1,G] is not the only project that is run on WCG. HST was supposed to start again, and yes, ARP is perpetually like Unobtainium, but they were already spreading the news of completely new projects supposedly coming, which are nowhere in sight.

What you seem to forget that the whole problem with WCG is now going on for 14 months. It's not "just" a drought of a few weeks,They can't even get their support email working in less than a month. And repeatedly, they have proclaimed that the whole system would be operational and peachy fine, only to fall flat on their face again a week, or two, later,. And then they get all riled up when those rather obvious things are being pointed out to them... sad

Re: OPN1 supply update

Seems to me WCG is running pretty well of late... so well my UPS overloaded when the GPUs drew too much current 😮

No, OPN is not the only project within WCG, MCM and SCC are also available and in good supply - I have yet to run out of WCG work since the restart.

I don’t hold Kremble responsible for the lack of HST and ARP work, that is down to the science teams behind those projects. Neither do I count the time it took to rewrite the system - since the restart WCG has been the most reliable project I work on.

Re: OPN1 supply update

I am occasionally getting work, but most queries usually get no work.
I recommend increasing the minimum and maximum work storage in BOINC's Computing Preferences to two days apiece.

Last week WCG admins said they want the supply of work units to meet the demand, but when I asked why they don't run a surplus to avoid outages, they went silent.

I think their computers are estimating our demand as much lower than it is, and correctly loading work units to meet that low demand. If you happen to request work right after the system makes it available, you'll get it. If you run entirely dry, you won't ask as often, and the system will appear to have been empty the whole time.

Re: OPN1 supply update

@Davie Diamond
I can confirm your statement and it is a part of my disappointment.
Until end of last week, each machine maintained a buffer between 16 and 24 hours,
Since the week-end, the machines struggle to get enough WUs, in the best case there are about 4 WUs waiting to start, what is inadequate for 16 thread machine, even for 8 thread machine.
This situation - as well as the troubles experienced during the last 14 months - is the reason for my previous post: there is simply facts.
Cheers,
Yves

PS: frankly, I do not care about Rosetta or other boinc projects. I am only participating and committed to WCG since January 2007.

Re: OPN1 supply update

Right now all threads dry, I will leave one machine on and when it gets work units again, I will fire up the other machines.
Cheers

Well, as I mentioned, the whole WCG system has yet to run for two weeks straight, without any kind of issue. Web site/forum crashed at least 3 times with in the last week alone. And at several times during the last few days, several hosts have been running completely empty or at least running only with something like 8 out of 20 possible threads because there were no WUs available. There are still issues open since at least September 29th, 2022, their support email isn't working for more than a month, it simply never ends. If you count this as "the most reliable", I don't even wanna know with what kind of dumpster fires you are wasting your time and energy... sad
