Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

Wow. Thanks bsmith for the detailed post and to the others here. Out of all the issues I was worried about with a major upgrade to 22.04, losing WCG wasn't one of them:( The only issue I had was WCG and the future doesn't sound good for Linux users here. How's this for an idea. What entries do I make to remove all of the program and I'll try the PPA fix, which I absolutely hate as I see that as a potential huge security/privacy risk?

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

The latest from Vitalii:

New release of #BOINC has been delayed to finalize the #Linux packages.
Stay tuned for further updates.

I'm interested to see if they release it as 7.26 or 8.0. I believe if they include sporadic apps it should be 8.0 as it would be a significant change to the architecture.

See: https://github.com/BOINC/boinc/discussions/5386

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

Alright, I tried to change back to Ubuntu 20.04 just for WCG and it seems messy. So while I wait for BOINC to maybe have a Linux fix, is there an official PPA for the project? I just hate PPA's.

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

Spent a couple hours going backwards to 20.04 just so I could crunch and it looks like the servers are down and it aborted all my work even though they hadn't expired. The general feel for this project is poor.

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

The servers haven't been down at all since 15 January.

Question: How can a website that's down abort all your work?

Have you tried installing the official WCG client for 'Linux Ubuntu/Mint/Debian and similar distributions'?

Exactly, he's barking up the wrong tree. And the BOINC related servers at WCG have now been up and running for 47 days...

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

adriverhof, I didn't save the log files but it said "internet ok, server may be down" or real close so that in English translates to the server may be down. It also aborted WU's that were not close to expiring and the status said something about system/program aborted so I lost all that work. At some time during the night it started up again by itself? What are you running to get all those badges?

Agrfan, yeah that's where I downloaded all my stuff. Now that I went back to 20.04 its working. So it looks like the delay for the Linux packages will fix the 22.04 issue, is that correct or even then the PPA will be required?

Thanks

I believe on Linux Mint (a Ubuntu derivative) you can find the messages that are shown in the BOINC Manager in the system logfile "/var/log/syslog".
It is a rotating file; on my Fedora system the logfile (/var/log/messages) is renamed once a week and a new one is created:
$ ls -lt /var/log/messages*
-rw-------. 1 root root 13092564 Jan 20 11:21 /var/log/messages
-rw-------. 1 root root 14167854 Jan 13 23:59 /var/log/messages-20240114
-rw-------. 1 root root 14233159 Jan 7 00:00 /var/log/messages-20240107
-rw-------. 1 root root 14592606 Dec 30 23:59 /var/log/messages-20231231
-rw-------. 1 root root 14745370 Dec 23 23:59 /var/log/messages-20231224
(Note that I use
- and
-tags around the output above for nice outlining in the forum.)

It also aborted WU's that were not close to expiring and the status said something about system/program aborted so I lost all that work.
From your description, I think the BOINC server decided that you had created a new device and so your 'old' tasks were 'orphaned'. By the way, how long does it take for your machine to complete a MCM1-task?
What are you running to get all those badges?
You'd better ask how long I have been running tasks. laughing That's almost 15 years now. Machines come and they go. Some perish, some get passed on to others.

Adri
PS If you hover long enough over the smiley above with your mouse you'd notice the word 'laughing' (in a decent browser).

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

The very short term fix was going back to Ubuntu 20.04. I really hope they get a solution for 22.04 as its only going to be more common. Is the new fix going to solve that issue? Depending on how much other stuff I'm doing a WU takes maybe an hour, if I'm busy I slow things down and it takes 2. Well congratulations on all those badges. I was involved 20 years ago with numerous dedicated machines but lost interest due to lack of progress which then as now makes me question how much any of us are really helping. Seems the points chasers are doing 80% of the work. It would simply be nice to actually get a substantial find that removes all doubt that we're helping. You and AgrFan have an impressive array of badges, very nice!
