Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

The latest from Vitalii:

New release of #BOINC has been delayed to finalize the #Linux packages.
Stay tuned for further updates.

Oh so where on this forum will they announce version 8 for Linux that may have the fix that allows Ubuntu 22.04 to work on WCG. I changed back to 20.04 just to do WCG but I wont wait forever?

Me confoozed.

Both of my crunchers are running Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS using Boinc 7.20.5 and have been running without problem for a long time.

The Ubuntu jammy repository current has a broken BOINC 7.18.1 like this
https://packages.ubuntu.com/jammy/net/boinc

To be using 7.20.5 you most likely installed a working version from here...
https://launchpad.net/~costamagnagianfranco/+archive/ubuntu/boinc

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

First, it probably won't be announced on this forum as WCG doesn't have anything to do with new releases of the boinc client.
Second, you may have or have not noticed, that the WCG Download page actually instructs you to enter distribution specific commands to install from the distributions specific repositories (not WCG related)
Third, the new release may or may not be designated version 8. It may be designated 7.25 or 7.26 or.... That is determined by the BOINC developers.
Fourth, not exactly sure what fix you are waiting on so cannot say with any certainty it will be included in the new release. My guess is (and it is only a guess) that once the new repositories are created and released the client installs will most probably have been tested against the supported distributions.
Fifth, once the new repositories are released, it is my understanding that they will be the "official" version of the client. Individual Linux distributions may or may not pick up and distribute the latest version of the client.

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

The "fix" I'm waiting on is so that Linux Mint Ubuntu 22.04 will not work on WCG and previous posts on this thread stated why and that "New release of #BOINC has been delayed to finalize the #Linux packages.
Stay tuned for further updates." That is the issue.
I changed back from 22.04 to 20.04 just to run WCG and now that there seems to be no interest in getting a fix for a top 5 Linux distro and no way to even get notified of it, it makes it simple, I'll just stop crunching for WCG.

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

Reading back through all the posts, I don't see anything that indicates that the problem is WCG related other than maybe that is the only project you tried. Does it work with other BOINC projects? Based on the symptoms stated, I would assume it doesn't as it appears to be an issue with the client itself. I understand your frustration, and I share it, as I'm stuck running old versions of the client on my Linux machines (I don't run Windows). The latest client release is 7.24 but I can't get it unless I want to compile the client myself. I am waiting to be able to install a new release to fix some nagging client (boinc manager) display issues that are quite annoying at times. My guess is, it is going to be at least a month before the new repositories will be released. Why not just stay on 20.04 until the updated clients become available?

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

I'm using BOINC 7.16. I can stay on this for a while, but there doesn't seem to be a way to know when/if that issue is ever fixed.

I always have used Gianfranco’s release as I understand that he is the developer and that is the “official” version.

Re: Hey Linux experts--Issue with Mint install

Even more of a perhaps note was that the thread was started in 2022. Ok, I've wasted enough cycles on WCG I won't delay system upgrades because BOINC or whoever can't fix a Linux issue. I'll check back once a while to see if the project is even still here.
