-Serial Experiments Lain (From what info I've gathered from others, I'm the only one I know who could actually follow this series and know what was going on. Except for the alien. I'm still baffled by the alien. But, many still enjoy it regardless of its ability to cunfuzzle.) -Boogiepop Phantom (I'm presently re-watching this series for my second time and I'm actually starting to understand what's going on. So, while you may be confused as hell the first time 'round, give it a chance.) -Last Exile (May be more up your alley since you seem to mostly be a straight forward story line and plot sort of a person.) -Neon Genesis Evangelion (A HUGE favorite with most anime fans. You probably can't go wrong with it even if you've never watched mech anime before.) -Gundam Wing (Though there are countless spinoffs, this anime has an ENORMOUS fan base. Also a mech anime.) -Rurouni Kenshin/Samurai X (Also quite possibly up your alley if you're in the mood for Inuyasha because it's way the hell better than Inuyasha yet also an action anime. I personally despise Inuyasha because I've been force fed it too many times.) -Kadocha (This is definitely a just for fun anime full of wacky hijinks. Insanely amusing.) WONDERFUL!!!! I've never heard of any of these and love extremely complex plot lines. It's even better if I have to watch it multiple times to figure out what's going on. When I find a series I like, I always dread the fact that it will eventually end. That's one think I like about Inuyasha - I don't think it will ever end. I got turned on to anime through the Cartoon Channel so I'm far from being an expert - just a very interested novice. I've seen a couple episodes of Samurai X - I think I might be able to get into it. Please give Ghost in the Shell a chance. It's fairly complex although I can't say it always makes complete sense. I love the feel of it though. It's cat-like, slipping from scene to scene. I also love the characters. Will check usenet for all the shows you listed. I subscribe to giganews and their retention times are up to 120 days - amazing. I started an anime thread for people who may not be team members but are into anime. No replys yet, but I will periodically try to bump it up in the recent threads. Where do you get your vids? Netflix has a good selection of anime, but half the time the disks were damaged so I canceled my subscription. Usenet is good, but even with a retention of 120 days you can't find everything you want. Thanks for the reply. Feel free to email me too - that goes for other anime fans as well. ![]() ![]() |

Ok, first, I confused Samurai X with Samurai Champloo - do I feel silly or what.
----------------------------------------checked binsearch.info. This is a usenet search engine that will create an NZB file for you - assuming you use Newbin as your news reader. Just click on "create nzb" and in the pop-up, click open (if you have newsbin set to auto download nzb lists) or "save" to open it and download manually. I think I got everything you mentioned, except Kadocha - may check into that one when i'm more in need of a laugh. I may end up missing some pieces since it's hard to gauge what you're getting from usenet subject lines. Thank you again for the recommendations. Will post to Anime thread when I'm able to watch them. at around 50 or so gigabytes and dl rate of 12mb/s, it will probably be a day or two before I get everything. ![]() ![]() |

I get most of my anime through Blockbuster online. I've only had two/three movies come in broken since we signed up oh back in... August/September of last year I think. If I'm buying I usually hit up amazon.com, deepdiscountdvd.com, or yesasia.com. I'll stop into Best Buy if I'm seriously desperate or have an awesome coupon.
----------------------------------------If you're a noobie to anime let me also recommend some anime movies: Castle in the Sky Cowboy Bebop The Movie Grave of Fireflies (watch the subtitled version not the dubbed, if you watch the dubbed version you'll lose some of the impact the movie has) Howl's Moving Castle My Neighbor Totoro Spirited Away Voices of a Distant Star (You should probably rent this one. Its only a half hour long and yet many places charge $30 for it! But, it's an amazing movie!) You can stop off at the team website for more anime recommendations as well as manga when you get into it (cause once you get hooked you'll slowly become one of us heh heh heh!) and more : ) http://www.redhorizonrising.com/SEM/aaaa.html [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at May 31, 2007 3:11:53 AM] |

Oh yeah, and could you post the link for the anime thread you've started? I wouldn't mind dropping in to see what's going on every now and again : )

Do you think I should post something to explain what it is, how to use it and what the best anime threads are? I know that whatever I do, some people are going to think I'm talking down to them, others will think I'm talking over their heads and the rest just won't be interested and will think I'm a geekish bore. If you're a noobie to anime let me also recommend some anime movies: Castle in the Sky Cowboy Bebop The Movie Grave of Fireflies (watch the subtitled version not the dubbed, if you watch the dubbed version you'll lose some of the impact the movie has) Howl's Moving Castle My Neighbor Totoro Spirited Away Voices of a Distant Star (You should probably rent this one. Its only a half hour long and yet many places charge $30 for it! But, it's an amazing movie!) I'm not a complete newbie, it's just that most of what I've been able to watch depended on what Cartoon Network was showing. That became very frustrating though because you never knew when they would air the first show of a series and they weren't scrupulous about showing things in sequence. For example, I tried watching //hack.sign but wasn't able to start at the beginning and kept missing episodes. I tried to use Netflix, but that was a disaster. Subscribed to Blockbuster for a couple weeks but arrival times could be measured on a geological time scale. Now that I have a DVD player that can handle avi, divx, xvid and other mpeg4 files, I get almost anything I want off usenet and just burn a data DVD which the player reads with no problem. Also, I'll soon install a box from Galaxy that will even read DVD vob files and holds as much as you can get on whatever hard drive you stuff into it. If I then connect it's usb port to storage area network box, I can upload to it from my computer whenever new shows are available. No more recoding dvd files to fit on a 4.7gig disk or trying to convert to avi format - that's going to be pretty cool. God, I'm such a geek. Most of the titles you listed are new to me. Someone mentioned the director of Sprited Away in the Anime thread. Checked him out on line and this movie popped right up. So that one is on my list. I'm pretty sure I saw the Cowboy Beebop movie but as i recall, i watched it in wrong sequence. The rest I've emailed to myself and will check into. You can stop off at the team website for more anime recommendations as well as manga when you get into it (cause once you get hooked you'll slowly become one of us heh heh heh!) and more : ) http://www.redhorizonrising.com/SEM/aaaa.html Once I have seed enough anime to be able to recognize some of the titles, I'll have a better idea of who in the group has similar tastes and can look more closely at their recommendations. BTW the link to the anime thread is Anime thread Thanks for the reply. ![]() ![]() |

I've never tired usenet. I suppose after the years of Napster, Kazaa and oh I can't think of the other one, I've been weaned away from the downloading insanity. Especially now that we've got Blockbuster online and it's so much more reliable in that you know the movies will be what you wanted, will work properly and you don't get dropped partway through a download. If you'd like to give a not too geeky synopsis of usenet's use someone might find it to their liking though : )
I'll drop by the anime thread now and again to see what's up. ; ) |

I use Cartoon Network. When I lived in Phoenix, there was a comic shop that rented anime. I got some stuff from there, but there's nothing like that around here. I don't get much time to watch anyway, so I'm kinda selective. I usually just rewatch ones I already have!
----------------------------------------Naruto is interesting (and has character gimmicks that don't suck!), but can sometimes be annoying. Bleach and Blood+ look somewhat promising, but have annoying character gimmicks. I guess I can't be pleased! Back to FLCL, Tenchi Muyo and Super Gals! ![]() ![]() |

I guess the only anime I really want to see right now is Le Chevalier D'Eon (spelling?). I've watched the first episode and thought it was just flippin' gorgeous! I just haven't been into the anime groove much lately because I've been so busy.
I did watch a couple of hours worth of a program on Discovery Times today that was on gaming. I mention this because it was bloody interesting. It was about how gaming has affected our lives. Holy wow was there crazy stuff in that show. I'd heard that gaming was like a pro sport in Korea, but I'd never actually seen the multitudes gathered to watch people play. I'm such a geek that I was actually playing a game on the computer while watching the show. How sad is that? lol |

I just got the first special edition DVD of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. It's kind of crazy. I like it. I like how Haruhi just doesn't care about other people's opinion of her.
----------------------------------------Not anime, but I also like Luna Lovegood's similar attitude in Harry Potter. She's just out there. Thanks for the encouragement, Dark Angel! ![]() ![]() |
