applause Lars --> Dr. Lars, can the grid enable PhDs ??

A big part of research is teaching the next generation to do research. So cellebrating when people get thier PHDs is a fun aspect of the job, also big projects tend to generate many phds ... we can expect that over the years the WCGrid will enable a few phds. .... the grid can't take credit for the phds, but it will invariably play an important enabiling roll, just as my phd was only posible because of a great deal of good computer support from the Formix Rangers (the baker-lab IT ninjas)... ok, to the point then:

Lars Malmstrom (two dots over the o) got his PhD this winter and alot of the thesis was grid stuff. He is at UWashington w/ Dave Baker (the same guy that Taught me) and Also at Lund University (no laughing over there in India, its just the name of the city). In any case he would have got a PhD with or without the grid but the grid helped get the calculations done for a lot of what he talked about. I meant to congradulate him (and his advisors!) in this forum earlier, but alas, time flies.

In any case the title is:
Genome-wide structural and functional protein characterizarion by ab initio protein structure prediction. [ ISBN 91-628-6689-3 , ISSN # 0346-6221 ]
so you could call this a grid enabled publication. ... a great read!

check it out if you tech minded ... some nice pictures of the system and the proteins rolling off it in there.

We could officially call this the first PHD that involved calculations on the grid!
