Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

i dont get it, somehow the 1st instal fell over and i dont know why, i did it "textbook style" something to do with msi file somehow,, arghhh..
then as act of desperation i thought i would unistall the prog, hmm would not let me do that, again argghhhh..

then i did something real dumb and tried to install while prog running (extra stupid - but curious experiment yes i was not paying close attention and saw the "leave prog running" comment without reading the next line , idiot me ) ...

then everything fell over , argghhh again, so i d/l the "new" boinc yet again, same problem, cant find msi file blah blah,

hmm runnningout of ideas, next thing i tired was to d/l another "old" boinc progy, hmm that worked, interestingly ot "found" a prob and a got a "repair option" hmm encouraging...

it started up looking exaclty like the old old one , so i thought goodo, progress of sorts, let me try the new one over the top of the new (recent 5mins old install OLD boinc)

installd smoothly, did the usulay attatch etc etc, is looking encouraging...

all is well, i still dobnt understadn why the 1st problem... ces't la vie a very roundabout way to solcve it but solved nonetheless
cheers :)

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

@Lawrence,

WinXP Pro fully updated. You may remember, i wrote about the docker staying in memory even when the GUI was being closed, when i started using 5.2.13 as a Newbie. I thought i found the answer in applying the option to not retain suspended process in memory, which it does not if properly closing the GUI. In this case 5.4.9 GUI freezes where you see CPU time, Progress %, Time to Go. As said the docker happily continues. I've had this now a number of times. The WU's complete and get accepted, long as i let it run its cause. If i shut windows down and restart, the WU is immediately reported as 100% complete and obviously gets an error at WCG as per below.

ep712_09 tpdc-mxirnto2ft Error 05/11/2006 14:52:21 05/11/2006 15:03:02 0.09 1 / 0
ep708_1D tpdc-mxirnto2ft Error 05/11/2006 12:18:34 05/11/2006 15:03:02 0.00 0 / 0

Observation is also, that once the rouge Docker finishes and gets accepted and a new WU is started, Docker and GUI connect again. Closing GUI then also closes the Docker and when restarting, picks up from the point of last save. Since my OS in present state is stable as a brick house, i rarely have need to boot i.e. can live with the problem / work around it without loosing work.

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Hi retep57,
When I said x86 I meant any 8086 descendant, including Pentium and Athlon64.

On another matter, reading http://boinc.bakerlab.org/rosetta/forum_thread.php?id=1582#16016 over on Rosetta@home, I see that Boinc.exe and BOINC Manager communicate with each other once a second using inter-process communications to keep the Task Log on BOINC Manager updated. This explains why my Zone Alarm firewall is showing regular second-by-second activity even when I am not accessing the Internet. I knew it had to be BOINC. Nice to know what is happening on my computer.

After downloading the file (say, into boinc_5.2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh), type

sh boinc_5.2.13_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
of course i had to edit it to 5.4.9 as that is old hat file etcc
ie
sh boinc_5.4.9_i686-pc-linux-gnu.sh
typed that into that infernal command line thingo and voila up and running , cheers, hmm that was easier than i expected.. cheers, btw thanx lawrence..

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Now all we need is for WCG to upgrade various parts of the server to support AMS, will be a long time coming probably

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

It installs over the old package. I right-clicked on my BOINC icon and selected Exit to stop the program. Then I downloaded the installation package and double-clicked on it to install the new BOINC.
I'm not sure I need to stop my old BOINC that soon. These are fast machines, but a 30 minute download on dialup.

Download new BOINC. I'm saving it in a separate download directory.
Stop old boinc.
Run install.
Start new BOINC manager.

That sequence worked for me.

I see a few changes in the statistics section...with mode buttons for a few more options.

Re: New version of BOINC 5.4.9

Hi retep.

Have you fixed the install that went pear-shaped yet? If not, then perhaps I can help. First of all, check that you're logged in as Administrator. Second, download and save the new BOINC package. Put it somewhere safe.

Next, try and uninstall the old BOINC. Normally you wouldn't have to do this, but you seem to have got something messed up on this machine. Remember to stop and exit BOINC completely, first. If the uninstall fails, then you may need to use a special tool to clean up the broken install. Ask for details - perhaps I can email you or something. The tool is quite capable of destroying your computer. :-S

Finally, install the new package you downloaded. You shouldn't have any problem with this.
