Info: Mac Intel vs Mac PowerPC

I just heard some important information. The floating point results produced by Mac Intel FPUs will differ slightly from the floating point results produced by Mac PowerPC FPUs. This is not a problem ordinarily, but it does matter to the way that BOINC validates results. So these two types of Mac need to be treated as separate platforms by the server. BOINC 5.4.9 identifies the Mac Intel boxes as Apple-Darwin, a new platform that will keep the server from trying to compare apples with oranges. The old version, BOINC 5.2.13, does not distinguish between PowerPC and Intel and therefore will cause validation problems.

We do not currently have the server set up for Darwin (Mac Intel). This should happen soon. Just set up BOINC 5.4.9 on your Mac and expect several weeks delay if it is an Intel before it starts downloading work units.

I have asked that this information be added to the Member News.

Re: Info: Mac Intel vs Mac PowerPC

Another update from knreed - The WCG servers were modified last week to handle BOINC 5.2.13 correctly on the Mac, separating things into 2 different platforms. However, we still do not have a platform for the explicit platform specified by BOINC 5.4.9 running on a Mac Intel. So for now, run the old BOINC 5.2.13 on Mac Intel boxes.

Sorry, I have been jumping the gun on this issue. I should have waited to get all the info before reporting it.

biggrin That did not take long

knreed says that he has set the servers to handle Mac Intels running BOINC 5.4.9 or 5.2.13. We still have to use a PowerPC (PPC) compiled version of AutoDock in emulation mode. It will be a while before we can compile and test a native version for Mac OS X (Intel).
