wcg_hdc_tma.exe

Suddenly I noticed when using task manager that there was an open executable named "wcg_hdc_tma.exe" that was using over 250,000k of memory, or, more than 20 times the usage of any other program. It was clear that my computer was suffering and so I found it, didn't know what it was, and shut it down. Then, a while later, it had reappeared. Anyway, I am just curious as to what it is, what it does, and why it sucks up so much memory! Anybody know the answer?

Thanks,

Jim

That's Help Defeat Cancer!

As shown on the system requirements page, there are times when HDC uses a lot of memory. HDC will only run on systems with 750MB of real memory. If your computer is suffering, give it a tune-up, starting with Windows Defrag.

Hmm, me again. I think I figured it out:

wcg - World Community Grid
hdc - Help Defeat Cancer
tma - Tissue MicroArray

Okay, that helps, but I am still curious as to why it uses SO MUCH memory in the midst of my using other programs. I will check into it more.

Re: wcg_hdc_tma.exe

Where you're going wrong is assuming 250MB is a lot. It may be a lot for web browsing or word processing, but it's peanuts for some kinds of computing - video and image processing, computer aided design, databases... and heavyweight scientific research.

The clever folk at WCG reduced the memory requirements of HDC from well over a gigabyte to a maximum of 500MB, and an average below 100MB. You will see spikes of around 250MB while the program writes a checkpoint file.

Re: wcg_hdc_tma.exe

Hello Jim Roper,
I was astonished myself at the memory usage of HDC (Help Defeat Cancer). Rick Alther says that it is the filters that use so much memory (adding 400 MB to the normal load). I wonder just how the filters are designed? But the program used up to 1.25 GB when we first started looking at it, so a lot of work has been done to cut it down to its present 'small' memory footprint.
