Before migrating to the GPUs, maybe we should first look into the optimization of the science apps thru SSE2 or SSE3. Why rush to support these GPUs when the applications running today (using the CPU) haven't been fully optimized yet?

Re: GPU's - they can do the work units yet?

BOINC 5.8 has the ability to detect features like SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, in a members PC needed for the distribution system to make sure, that 3 work units in a quorum is send to equal capable CPUs. There's lots of work in the background ongoing readying the BOINC systems for 5.8. With 6 new projects planned to go life in 2007, who knows what they will bring and what parts the scientists & designers, not at WCG, considered in the development of these projects.

I'm sure everybody would love to see the science apps (of WCG) run faster than it is at present.

5.8.4 does not yet report the detection in the message log, but this is how it will be on the next incremental.

http://www.tgdaily.com/2007/02/16/nvidia_cuda/

Nvidia activates a supercomputer in your PC
What does it take to transform your PC into a teraflop supercomputer? It may be less than you think - two graphics cards and programming know-how are enough to push your desktop PC's performance into a range that required 10,000 processors a decade ago.....
