Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Haven't had much of chance to on lately. Between the cold, the snow and the workload, it has not left time for much else. I did not experience a problem with any of my machines during the changeover. Sorry to hear that ultima_thule did. Hope he can fix the fleet. -18 F(-27 C) right now, headed for -25F(-31C). But then we will get a warmup. Above zero by Friday. Gotta go. Stay warm and keep crunching.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Stary stary night here biggrin

*örps* boy this beer is so guud!

Some economics...

ECB is putting minimum bit interest heavily down, so there is not non risk return available anymore. So only solution is choose risk of some kind. There is lot of capital protected product available, but I'm myself too hungry and need to see my capital have growth, so I really need choose some real risk.

Tool that I have actually choose is moral hazard.
I have never tough this before, but right now it seems to be only reasonably solution here left.

Idea is quite simply that if bank is "rotten", then price of that it need to pay on Interbank market is so high, that it inevitably reflect to deposit offers also.
Now it is only need to understand to stay away from stock and bonds.. And stay on depositor layer...

When those US banks went down, return rate of bonds was something like 50-90%, but when those Island bank sink, their return rates were something like 0.something.
But newer the less, depositors was saved with multinational operations.

And this is quite much were I lean on.
There is few bank that offers something like 6-10 p.a. to time deposit.

I know that those banks will go down, but I will count on that, that government will not let them go down.
Stocks will be probably reseted, bond will return only fraction, but depositor will be saved.

Situation right now just happen to be that some banks will pay better interest that high yield are curving.
I think last emission was Daimlers bond, three year and nine percent.
If I can get ten percent interest from "piggy bank" then I will choose that.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Always be careful. More risk is more reward, but also chances of getting the reward lessen. Best rates here are about 3% in 6 month time certificate, risk is almost nothing as FDIC insured. I think market will tank to 7500 and bottom in two or three months. Hopefully by that time most bad news about bad debt will already be discounted by the market. I only take on as much risk as will let me sleep at night. If I lie awake at night worrying, it is too much risk.I only put into the stock market that which I am willing to lose in hopes of making some money eventually. I only buy what I know. Right now I know most retailers are hurting badly. Some stores look like a ghost town now, more employees than customers. Eventually it will pick up as some stuff wears out and you need to get more or do without. If you are making 10% and are comfortable with that good for you. You are braver than I.

Cheers

There is no way to get even close to that.
Non risk offer would mean Swedish bank and those offer something like 2% to 6m right now.
Situation in Switzerland is lot "worst", last time I check (another from big banks, one that does not have CDO problem), they did have 0,5% admin fee and rates were lower that Swedish Bank could offer. So I would probably get something like 1,5%.

On the another hand, on Estonia, there is bank one bank that will pay 6% for six month. This is simply because rating of that bank B1/B+
It might sound funny but after all rating of Estonia itself is A3 while all Nordic countries are Aaa.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

The bank rates are terrible on passbook accounts, about .15%. The best rates seem to be at the credit unions. I think they stayed clear of most risky loans, so they are in better financial shape than the big banks. I do not put all of my eggs in one basket. I think it is wise to deal with several different institutions. Right now the problem is to find any extra money to save. Once you pay for the necessities of food, clothing, shelter, health costs, etc., disposable income is tiny. But I count my blessings. I did not have any money invested with Madoff ! biggrin.

Well.....Nemo propheta in patria
http://www.parexgroup.com/en/services/term-deposit/

Regarding my knowledge, government has already nationalize that bank, and I know for sure Finnish government has some mild monetary rescue operation ongoing pro Latvia.
So it is very luring to open my next account there on Baltic block biggrin
