Re: HCC Task Apears to Stop

Under Vista, you must install BOINC using the Administrator account. This looks a lot like the problem - working at first, then failing with a permissions error the next time you log on.

Uninstall BOINC, then reinstall as the Administrator (not just an account with admin rights).

I'm sorry for the trouble this has caused you.

Re: HCC Task Apears to Stop

Hello Didactylos

That's not the problem. This version of Boinc has been running under the Administrator account for more than six weeks now -- in fact, I've always installed (and mostly run) under the administrator account for three years now and for a couple of years before that under an UD account.

However, a shutdown and restart of Boinc appeared to resolve everything but the "state file" problem:

2007-11-25 6:08:50 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task X0000040361302200410291738_1 using hcc1 version 515

As you can see, both cores are working now and WCG has downloaded one more task in readiness to start.

Upon review the original situation arose when an attempt was made to upload and download a different HCC task at the same time. This may have been the first time that that situation occurred on my Boinc facility.

I'll continue monitoring and will let you know of any developments.

Regards

Alex

Saw a few times after commencing a test installation of ZoneAlarm version:7.1.078.000 Free Home. Not seen again since setting permissions in that firewall.... could be coincidence. As an aside taught it to ignore all localhost/loopback traffic which ended all the blinking in the system tray as well.

Re: HCC Task Apears to Stop

Thanks Sekerob

I'm using Bitdefender as my firewall/antivirus.

X0000040361302200410291738_1 now stopped/failed with 38 seconds processing left. After restarting Boinc again I got:

2007-11-26 3:28:43 AM|World Community Grid|Restarting task X0000040130140200410010952_1 using hcc1 version 515

2007-11-26 3:29:03 AM||Can't rename current state file to previous state file; Cannot create a file when that file already exists. (0xb7)

I've suspended X0000040130140200410010952_1 and another HCC task that had not started. That leaves another HCC running in the other core and a new Human Proteome running in the core in question.

It seems as if the state file is causing the problem. What is a state file? Can I get around this problem?

Regards ... Alex

Re: HCC Task Apears to Stop

WCG techs have asked in a Beta forum thread to try 5.10.30 http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=17203. I've seen previous cases of older versions being reported v.v the client_state.xml rename issue, but never had it until the Firewall installation. This box happily processes all the projects, and as you see the sample occurred when a DDDT was running.

The 'state' file (in full client_state.xml) is as it's name suggests, a housekeeping file e.g. continuously recording how far BOINC has progressed with the job(s). BOINC very frequently renames the file to a 'previous' and writes a new one. If something else is holding on to it or permission fails, it cant perform this activity. Too many fails and things will crash.

My client is installed as administrator, same as you in the C:\BOINC\ dir. Auto Startup continues to be blocked by Windows Defender.... it reports "No Certified Yet", but then it's a single user install and not as service. Going to try that in the coming days.... seen the graphics and put that part of interest to bed.

Re: HCC Task Apears to Stop

I installed new release of BOINC 5.10.30 yesterday and have had a record 24 hours of problem-free execution for the first time since this problem surfaced. Hopefully that's that.

Thanks to Sekerob for your help.
