All good things must come to an end and this is the case with the Nutritious Rice for the World project as the final results came in earlier this week.
We are analyzing the results and this will take some time. All of the scientists involved in this project are volunteers as well and we will be analyzing the data to identify proteins and genes that may be useful in breeding better rice strains. We are also applying for funding to further develop some of the technologies such as gpu acceleration of the process and sophisticated techniques that recognise structure and sequence patterns or signatures to identify the function of the protein. There are some tentative plans to perhaps apply the software to other plant genomes. More details are avaialble at http://protinfo.compbio.washington.edu/rice/status.html On behalf of the scientific team involved I'd like to thank the IBM team for their support and enthusiasm for the project. Ensuring that the software could run properly on such a diverse set of hardware is quite an amazing feat and IBM deserves recognition for the time and resources that they have devoted. However, none of this would have been possible without the help of the thousands of volunteers who donated their computers to this project. We consider it a great honour that you have allowed us onto their home machines to run our simulations these past years. Thank you so much for your efforts. Hong Hung |

Thanks Hong, great news.
Pleasure on our side. Hope your analysis will go on well. Hope we will hear a word from you. Maybe some new project metioned :-) And what kind of plants are in consideration? |

Here here, I'll certainly second that. I hope that the next phase of your project continues to run smoothly and that, eventually, you'll find the answers you were hoping for ![]() Obviously, you now know where to come if you've got a heck of a lot of grid-like processing to do ![]() ![]() |

It has been my pleasure to contribute more than 2 CPU years to this project.
Please keep us informed about further steps. It would be outstanding news if we contributed to provide some people with better rice to fight malnutrition. Best regards |

I know I was happy to contribute to this project during its duration. So much of the world's population relies on rice for the bulk of their diet. I couldn't help but see this as a very worthwhile project.
----------------------------------------I'm also one of those people who worries about the potential of a devastating fungus/bacteria/whatever taking out one of our few staple grains and the more diversity we can produce the better it will be for all of us. Thank you and all of the scientists working on this project for your contributions as well. ![]() Distributed computing volunteer since September 27, 2000 |

It was a pleasure to assist in my small way as part of this project. I look forward to working on future projects on other small grain research.

Hello lhhung.
Reference: Your [Apr 9, 2010 6:57:35 PM] post. Great news! Always pushing the boundaries of what is possible -- that sure gives me a rush! I'm only too glad to have also participated in the project. We'll do it again sometime and you can take that to the bank! ![]() Good day ; |

When I started almost 2 years ago, I immediately decided that this was my #1 project. Glad to have donated 5 years.
